I loved Goosebumps as a kid. Had to get them all once I finished the Tower of Terror. My folks took notice. I was sent to this thing, some event, where R.L. Stine was supposedly going to be there. I was moderately excited, meh really, as I couldn't appreciate the writer for his writing. I was a kid. I was excited about meeting other kids that were crazy about the books though. At the event, which took place in a mall that hadn't been doing so hot, there must have been like twenty kids in the event area already sitting and waiting. No one was smiling or talking and there was an air of confusion. I was the last kid to join in and we waited in silence for several minutes before some woman comes up and starts talking. I honestly don't remember what she said. She looked nervous and after she stopped talking, we kids just kind of sat there. The older kids wandered off first and then the younger ones. I sat there until my parents came back to collect me. To this day I have no idea what happened, but that's been a defining experience for all the things I love. I guess what I'm really trying to say is 'yea, me too.' :D

I watched it and didn't really like it. It is sort of humour I don't find funny, animation is ugly and characters unlikeable. Just like South Park, there are clever bits I find interesting, and I like a lot some episodes of South Park, but presentation and humor kills it for me.

to be fair you have to have a very high level of skill with the blade to understand samurai jack. the humor is extremely subtle and without a solid grasp of fundamental bushido most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. there's also the scotsman's nihilistic outlook which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from narodnaya volya literature for instance. the fans understand this stuff they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about life. as a consequence people who dislike samurai jack truly are idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate for instance the humour in Aku's existential catchphrase "I'll get you next time Samurai Jack!" which itself is a cryptic reference to tsun-zu's the Art of War. i'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as genndy tartekofsky's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. what fools... how i pity them. joy and yes by the way i do have a samurai jack tattoo. and no you cannot see it. it's for the ladies' eyes only- and even they have to demonstrate that they're within 2 karate belts of my own (preferably lower) beforehand

Any fan base that becomes toxic seems to made up of fans who miss the point of what being a fan is. If the fandom degenerates to idiocy then there is something somewhere that is enabling that. There are fans and fandoms that don't tear themselves to bits, or disgust non fans. To best gauge whether it's worth publicly identifying as a fan...wait a little bit, and se who picks up the interest, and what they do with it, and how long interest in it lasts. Lots of things are fads, and after the first flash in the pan, the real fans will remain, the rest scatter to whatever is deemed new and trendy. "True" fans (lol) don't need to trumpet their like for something every termini of the day, or constantly all over social media, or try to revolve their whole life through the filter of the thing they like. They feel stabbed to the heart if someone else has a different view of the show, or whatever it is they like. Real life is bigger than that. Sometimes it's easier to keep your cards close to your chest until it's a sensible time to show them. Steer clear of the idiots, and just don't get pulled into infantile chest thumping and pissing contests. Fandoms and haters tend to be the most opinionated groups on the internet. I feel like I'm not supposed to have any room to talk since I would consider myself a part of many fandoms (mostly cartoons) but I can acknowledge that the shows I like aren't for everyone. I feel like the fandom of my favorite show (Steven Universe) Is just as bad, if not, WORSE than Rick and Morty. I still remember the Zami incident. Or the Keystone Motel incident. It seems like people in fandoms often times end up missing the entire point of the goddamn show. Steven Universe is about love, friendship and acceptance. The fandom tends to be pretty violent to anyone who does anything they deem "wrong" Rick and Morty is a fun parody of Back to the Future, and the fandom tends to treat it like you need a goddamn doctorate degree in theoretical physics or some bullshit.

The show is spectacular. The fandom is the birthplace of cancer. The show is lauded critically and commercially for it's body positivity, pro-lgbt themes, progressive views and well written characters. The fandom is extremely protective of these themes. To the point of telling a fan artist who drew a large character as slightly skinnier that she is to kill herself. It's baffling. The show is about love, friendship, redemption, and forgiveness, but the fandom somehow translates this as "verbally assault anyone who disagrees with us." There's the much more accidental Keystone Motel incident, where there was a place in the show called the Keystone Motel, and people learned that there was a *real* Keystone Motel, and left joke reviews based on the episode that hurt the motel's business. To be fair though, this was accidental, and the fans deleted their reviews and apologized for that one.

Personally, I thought Pickle Rick is a pretty solid episode. The point is that mob mentality has always existed, and it's really powerful. This is incorrect because the quality of each episodes varies wildly, so if you watch 2 of the bad episodes you might be misled into thinking that the show as a whole is bad. You have to see some specific episodes, maybe by asking someone to recommend an episode based on your tastes, before being able to decide if it's worth watching.

Something blows up in popularity, the amount of fanatics that either act super cringey or just shove their passion out way too far end up causing major backlash and general toxicity happens from both sides and everyone suffers.
