Emperor were clearly the most talented band out of the old Norwegian scene. This is what proper training, discipline, education (and of course a shit load of raw ability) can do for you.

I totally agree, their sound is simply unique. Ihsahn is incredibly talented when it comes to the way his music is written if you look at it from a theory perspective. Its more than just random notes temelo'd as fast as possible. Always been a huge Emperor fan. But id still argue that Nattens Madrigal by Ulver is the best BM album of all time.

B I was impressed a lot by that album myself, but couldn’t finish listening to it. The mixing is SO bad, which usually isn’t an issue for me. I listen to a lot of harsh, lo-fi music, but that album in particular, oh man, what a fucking headache. I’d like to give it another go some day though.

@@Ugleseth Yeah, but still, being self-taught usually means studying other people's techniques and theories, just on your own without direct guidance. So he would most likely still being referring to something pretty concrete. Whether that means he is actually reading books on theory and scales, and understands sheet music etcetera, I don't actually know, but he does seem pretty well-informed in his playing.

@@crawlingamongthestars3736 he learned playing guitar by playing along to Iron Maiden records. He started playing in bands when he was around 12 and he was 17 when Emperor recorded their first album. Really impressive stuff.
