Interesting to compare the recording he made of this Vierne Symphony back in the mid-50s on the Cavaille-Coll console and the recording here made in the early 70s on the new console of the time. The old recording breathes beautifully throughout and is in generally slower tempi throughout all the movements than the 70s recording.The later recording is technically more biting and sharp in the louder movements, and of course, the chamades make their presence felt, bringing a more electrifying style altogether and showing Cochereau's brilliant Dupre-like technique.The chamades received mixed reactions when they were installed, but interestingly, as noted in the Carbou book of Cochereau's life, he had apparently installed a piston to bring out only the Cavaille-Coll stops - nobody used it!The rebuilt organ of this period really put Notre Dame Cathedral on the map - every organist of note wanted to give a recital there. Over 90% of the Cavaille-Coll and Cliquot stops were retained under the Cochereau restoration, so it was hardly a massacre as some critics say, but the new stops added an exciting and most dramatic edge....the rest is history.

Indeed, with his right away after dosed usage of the chamades... only using the mutations and not even all the reeds... which may leave his detractors... detracted... him ''always over-using his chamades''... The only thing being maybe his sectionnal fast playing that could be a tad slower, but out of this, this is absolute passion, with that more than incredible last chord ''plaquage'' !!

Caspita Samuele che bel regalo che ci hai fatto.!.!.! Il disco integrale di Cocherau che interpreta Duprè al grande organo di Notre Dame: una vera chicca da collezionisti che cercherò di scaricare, nonostante la lunghe interruzioni tra i vari movimenti. Il suono è ottimo e giustifica questa lacuna. Ma come hai fatto a postare un video di 45 minuti??? Chissà il tempo che ti ci è voluto, non oso nemmeno pensarlo ma solo ringraziarti infinitamente per questa straordinaria sorpresa. Luciano.

Louis Vierne disait: "Je n' ai qu' un but: EMOUVOIR ! Préparez vos mouchoirs ! Pierre Cochereau fit installer une console " à l' Américaine" avec transmission numérique SYNAPTEL IBM. Une interface MIDI a été prévue, mais non installée. Dans le futur, peut-être ! Ce qui permettrait à un organiste de jouer sur une console mobile placée à coté de l' autel, et l' auditoire, et communiquant en MIDI avec le grand orgue Cavaillé Coll. Du temps de Louis Vierne, et Leonce de St Martin, c'était la console en arc de cercle, comme à St Sulpice, où Marcel Dupré y fit ses splendides compositions ! Dans cette symphonie, le scherzo est d' une incroyable beauté, et évoque, un peu, un conte de fées pour enfants, ou un monde merveilleux pour les enfants, merveilleusement restitué sur les jeux de tierce sur cet orgue. Jeux de tierce ? Olivier Latry ou Philippe Lefebvre pourront rectifier ce que je dits, eux, ce sont de prestigieux musiciens !
