What he meant was mathematical thinking, which is essential part of any engineering field. For getting a rank, yes.. you need to be decently good at all subjects, but do you think one can survive in engineering (at a good level) without having mathematical and analytical skills ? I got 3K rank in JEE 2005 and back then the math score was deciding the rank because most of the students were decently good at physics and chemistry.
