Specially designed for this work. Many inland tugs used a contraption like that in winter. Less damage to the paint on the hull anyway...

How does it works? Why they put that thing in front of the boat?

To break the ice. It has the same shape under water as above, so the bow ("plow") pushes itself up the ice out of the water and by the weight of the boat/plow the ice breaks. The bow of that boat itself is not designed to break ice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXqulWhsnbRghdU

Is zo'n ploeg om de romp/neus te beschermen of het ijs effectiever te kunnen breken?

Dit is puur omdat het effectief is. deze ploeg ziet er van onder ongeveer het zelfde uit als van boven en schuift daardoor eigenlijk op het ijs. en zakt dan door zijn gewicht door het ijs. Door de scherpe hoek gaat dit heel geleidelijk.
