I keep buying the best Hammond B3 clones and my collection grows. I can get a very convincing sound from what I already own but this B3 version seems to have a more relaxed presentation of what a Hammond is supposed to sound like. It sounds more relaxed because there is less to be annoyed about. I've owned 3 real Hammonds and they a real pain to take to a gig which I stopped doing in 1983. I now have all my keyboard sounds on a MacBook Pro with a synth used as a controller so if the Mac has problems, I can plug in the synth and finish the gig. Nothing beats the original keyboards/synths for sound but I can now travel with a keyboard museum and orchestra in a laptop bag and still enjoy the tone and expressiveness of these old instruments. Now if someone could make a controller with keys having 9 contacts, that would be worth buying. Most people don't know but Hammonds are touch-sensitive and have 9 levels of tone. As each contact under the keys makes contact, it triggers a drawbar from high to low.

I do exactly the same Victor. Mainstage on a Macbook, with a full suite of plugins including Hammond. I'm in my mid-60s and lugged a chopped B-3 and 122 around for years. Loved it but can't stand the lugging anymore and can't find a decent tech nearby in my part of the world. These plugins are great but each one has its strengths and weaknesses and there's nothing like playing a real Hammond, no matter how you cut it.

One thing about IK Multimedia. I have purchased several of their software Apps through several years for my iPad. And, the same for my laptop PC. I have found that once they release a product, unless there are operational issues that need an update to be corrected, they usually do not add things to there Apps at customer’s request. They may come up with a version 2. But, that usually means an additional purchase. With B3-x, my guess is that you won’t see any additional models of organs or any additional Leslie simulations simply added to a free update.

Nice review and great playing. In my humble opinion the lack of a simple sustain pedal c64 function is just silly, although it is of course authentic for an organ. In multiple keyboard setups there are times when I need that - for example in layers with other sounds, or simply when I need a chord to hang on as I move my hands to a different keyboard. Another function I would like is for the pitch bend to fall and rise back like a real hammond when you turn the motors off and on again.

I know this was done a year ago but I thought I'd ask you for some help anyway. I currently own 3 Hammond B3 VI plugins but have never been able to achieve a sound that was used on the intro of the Wallflowers hit called " One Headlight ". During the intro the organ almost sounds possessed. It's very haunting & almost seems to be coming from a graveyard late at night. That's the image that I see as the intro is being played & I love it! However, I've never been able to recreate that sound with any plugins that I currently own. I use B4 v11, the Native Instruments Vintage Organs, & a VB3 plugin as well. I'm considering getting the IK Organ based on what I've heard here, so I'm hopeful of achieving the sound I'm after. If anyone has an example of the drawbar settings for that sound I'd be very grateful for your help. Someone was saying it would be nice to stop to rotation of the Leslie & it does have a feature called " BRAKE ". So there is Fast, Slow, & Stop to control the rotors which is identical to a Hammond! I would also like this VI to use two Leslie's as an option with this plugin. Thanks & Cheers

@@steveraschella8233 the sound is comparable; different flavors really. The XK5 has the advantage of the interface and the multi-contact system. If you had an XK5 would you need the B-3X? The Leslie sim in the B-3X is better. The actual organ sound is comparable, I think.

B5 is sample based: it contains 10 sec. (!) samples for any tonewheel, and vib/chorus IS NOT a fx but is also a sampling matter ( again: 10 sec. samples for each TW, and for each of the six vib-ch positions!! ) so it is pure & real tonewheel / vib.scanner sound, virtually without loops (who keeps on the same note in a song for more than 10 seconds?): really amazing.

Leslie is better than B5 V2.5 however, the latter has a lot that is missing from this from IK Multimedia; for example the B5 has better midi mapping, velocity on the key click, control over individual tone generators, loudness robbing control, more microphone positions and room ambience. The B5 lacks pre Leslie EQ options and the EQ for the Leslie itself lacks the sophistication of the B3x. The spatial characteristics of the B3x Leslie is better than the B5. I hope Arnaud at Acoustic Samples has a listen to the B3x and works his magic to produce a version 3 which has a Leslie emulation as good as the B3x. I tried the Blu3 but, there is something synthetic with the raw tones. Lots of good functions though. The Arturia B3 V has a great interface and some other good features but a terrible Leslie.

@@fulviabarkstonash Agree, even if I find a bit more plastic basic sound in B3X than in Blue3..regarding the nine contact "detachment" velocity related, actually only the VB3 II, Blue3 & B5 have this function and Arno of Acoustic Samples (B5) made it way better than the others, e.g. in full drawbars and very low velocity you can perceive all the nine tones entering sequentially, imho a little magic !

Hey Jim. I'm in a pickle. I'm trying to find the best organ for the buck. Right now, it's between two organs- Nord C2D and the Hammond Skx. I'm leaning towards the Hammond because of its versatility. Please help me the best you can to make a decision. Thanks Richard
@JimAlfredson5 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm a Hammond endorsed artist so I'm supposed to tell you to buy the Hammond. Honestly, either one would be a good choice, but the Hammond does have the versatility of the non-organ sounds. And the SKX allows you to use up to two non-organ sounds at the same time as well as the organ engine. So it's pretty handy. And it does sound really good. The Nord sounds good too but I've never liked the sound of them when I play them. I don't know why. When I hear a recording of me playing them (like a KZbin video from a concert or something), they always sound just fine but in the moment, on stage, I don't really enjoy playing them. It's weird. Whereas I love playing the SK series. The acoustic piano isn't the best but it's more than passable in a standard band context. I wouldn't use it for a solo piano gig or a jazz piano trio gig. But in a blues band or rock or country, it works fine and cuts well. The Wurli is good, the Rhodes good, and the Clavinet sounds are stellar. Those are the ones I use the most. In terms of strict bang for the buck, I think the SKX is a better value if only due to the versatility.

chrissansum Very nice! Does a plugin typically cost a lot less than buying a clone instrument? Seems tempting at the right price. I guess ultimately a plug-in has a limited lifespan compared to a standalone instrument - since computer technology changes over time (you might not expect to be able to load it up on a pc in 20 years time). The display doesn’t seem to show quite a few of the notes you are playing - wonder why that is? They definitely seem to have nailed the sound. Thanks for the great video!

Even if compatibility with new operating systems break, you will be able to use it in some way 20 years from now. Either by using it on an older machine or in a virtual machine. I wouldn't worry about that. There are pros and cons with both. If you play a lot of gigs and use it as your main instrument I'd go for the dedicated hardware, but in the studio I think the plugin is far more flexible and cost effective.

Hi Steve! You need the version of B-3X for the iPad, which is separate from the Mac / PC version I used here. And then you would need a way to get MIDI into the iPad and audio out of the iPad. There are many options available to do this from various companies. IK Multimedia makes a wonderful, small unit called the iRig Pro Duo that does exactly what you'd need and provides professional quality 1/4" stereo outputs. www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigproduo/ I'll be doing a review of it next month.

Too Sense Wirth hey thanx. I bought the iRig powerbridge and pro duo so everything is working fine now. You mentioned that you have a couple iPads w B3X...did you have to buy B3x twice or was you able to somehow use the app in both iPads? If so how? I’ve been playing B3 and ALL the clones since the 70’s (yeah old school player!) and nothing comes as close to the real thing as the B3x. I believe a lot to do with this is the onboard Leslie collection. I’ve been hammering on IKMedia to offer that collection for the iPad...so many of us are using the iPad onstage any more that it would make perfect sense for them to create that so we could use our clones via the Leslie. I like the B-3X a lot but IK needs to explain this CPU hog. In GigPerformer or Cubase, it is a pig on the CPU. Here are my results in GigPerformer compared to the GSI VB3 II and the B-5. On a Thunderbolt 3 Mac with an Antelope Orion Studio 2017 at 96k at 256 samples the VB3 II is at 8%, the B-5 is at 13% and the B-3X is at 40%. Basically the same results in AudioUnits, VST or VST3. Is this a known problem that will be ironed out with an update or is the program really that CPU intensive?

Albert Ahlf, IK Multimedia just released Hammond B-3X for iPad, this past week. They claim it has all the functionality of the PC version. Generally, I do like IK’s software products. I own many of them for both PC and iPad. As much as I have been dying for the offering of a truly decent Hammond for IOS, I’m going to try to hold off until a few more reviews begin surfacing. If it turns out to be a stable instrument without hogging too much of the CPU, I will definitely be adding this to my iPad setup. From early audio reviews, it seems apparent that IK has done a superb job with this.
