Great vid. I’ve got a bideli 3kg roaster, do you think this small sample roaster would be good to compare coffee with what would come out of the bideli on larger roasts? I.e. a good way to test roasts before chucking lots of beans in the bideli. Thanks for your help

I’ve been super excited for this review I did go ahead and buy the home roaster Version and it is fantastic makes brilliant coffee it’s super fun to use and so far has enough adjust ability for a complete novice really stoked I bought it and ikawa gave me 70 quid‘s worth of credit to buy coffee which was a complete bonus

I'm considering the home roaster since I pretty much only make espresso I think I could roast a batch every other day and keep a running que of perfectly aged roasts.
@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee

Most definitely. The roast on it do not take that long and the home version is a 100grams. You roast a batch a night and you will have plenty of coffee. It is fun to experiment with. I am looking at espresso machines now. That is the next thing I wan to get into. I am clueless when it comes to espresso.

@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee I use a 9Barista as it's perfect for camping/overlanding. I compliment it with a bellman stovetop steamer and I've got a cappuccino or latte in minutes whether I'm in the wilderness or at home.

@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee I would absolutely recommend it you just need a fine stepped grinder as dose and grind are the only way to control shot time.

Thanks for the great review.. I am actually new to the roasting business and i have a question: can u emplement that same roasting profile that u found in ikawa -or any sample roasting machine- on a commercial roasting machine and get the same results?
@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer, no. It will provide you an idea of the capabilities of the coffee as you can roast a few different batches at small quantities to find what you like. Then you can take that info and dial your bigger roaster in. Put because it is an air roaster it will be completely different than a gas roaster. The ikawa will just give you a really good idea of the potential of a coffee without having to roast full batch sizes on a big machine.

Great video, did you look at Kaffelogic Nano 7? Would appreciate if you review it too. It seems to be like a golden horse, with only 20% the price of Ikawa pro.

does it make your house smell like a coffee roaster?
@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee 2 жыл бұрын
It will. But if I have the vent on and I am not roasting super dark it is not that bad at all. My wife would let me know real quick if so! Haha

As you don't show a live demo a few questions in my mind come up. Noise most "air roasters" run 80-90dB(60Db is normal conversation A 1 dB change in a sound equates to about a 26% difference in sound energy remember that a 3 dB difference is a doubling of energy levels) Then there is the issue of smoke and stink, if it don't (most do so you the hand wave is to never roast dark) set off your smoke detector when roasting dark (agtron 35-30)is great but very very uncommon. The sample you show is agtron 45-50 nice but hardly giving all the options to the consumer it's "what do you mean you don't like light roasted coffee, are you insane!".

It’s just as loud as the oven vent when you turn it on and under the oven vent you can roast as dark as you want. You also don’t have to be in one location. Bring it to your car, porch, or boat. This has been about the only roaster I can roast late at night and not wake everyone up. It’s easy to find fault with anything if you look hard enough though. My biggest complaint is just the price. Everything else is almost perfect for me.

I use the Pro100 for work. We have a few very dark coffees that I sample on the Ikawa. I do quite a bit of those samples at home and, like Rob, I use my oven's vent hood to exhaust the smoke. The smoke is more prominent as is the odor post 2nd crack but, that's to be expected. When my wife gets home she is able to smell that I was roasting but, I get fussed at MUCH less if I use the vent hood lol As for dB, I'd call it around 65. It's not quite but, I never have to raise my voice or ask other to do so. (i'm hard of hearing)

@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee Ok so given you have to run it under the vent and it's as loud as the vent fan then it's not designed for daily kitchen use. As a product design engineer finding fault and designing to rectify them is what I do, and "home" coffee roasters like the Ikawa have a plethora of them. We have not talked about cleaning, unless there has been a big change in the design the manual stipulates a cleaning regimen that requires partial disassembly. It's not a uncommon situation, most "appliances" are just scaled down more attractive versions of what was considered the SOP commercial design, not a clean sheet of paper re think, and as the tech is over 50 years old now it was way over due for a clean sheet of paper re think.

Without the ability to register First Crack, you’re not really roasting like a pro/commercial roaster would.

They heard you! The Pro 100x has a humidity sensor that registers first crack. Which is why I am now considering. Although at a $6,000 price tag, I'm on the fence.
