Day after Pearl Harbor...the White House had a special visitor. It WAS ...retired General Blackjack Pershing. Long retired. He was 84 years old. But now....in full uniform... volunteering for Active Duty. Roosevelt couldn't say NO. Instead he said."You are Magnificent.". Roosevelt was a politician... Pershing was America. He knew the challenges. He lead our troops in WWI. Roosevelt needed him to talk to the people and the General's. Smooth ruffled feather's...they needed to raise an Army. With everything brand new...learning on the go. That meant younger officers. Pershing accepted his role....Got everyone to pull together. Even back then. .there was conspiracy theories and people trying to blame Roosevelt or the War Department for the surprise at Pearl Harbor. Blackjack was simple and tobthe point. You can start by blaming the Japanese...then yourselfs. Pershing was outspoken before the war. But now with Pearl Harbor on the 7th of December and HITLER declaration of war on the 11th of December. America was in a full two front war. There was alot to do. No bickering. MacArthur in the Pacific. Ike in Europe.

Black Jack Pershing went to Mexico and did work. He went to France and the Europeans knew they were in the field with a warrior. How many other generals could be that badass post-WW2? Pershing and Teddy Roosevelt were dyed in the wool soldiers. May they rest in peace.

Picked by Marshall since Marshall knew that he was very good at planning operations when he was a G-3. He also was only promoted to Brigadier General in October 1941 just a bit over two months from Pearl Harbor. So he was a very junior General but Marshall knew that he was the best individual for the job since he could get the British and French working together instead of fighting each other. Marshall knew that while many thought that he would be the one leading the efforts in Europe but he needed to be back in the states leading the complete effort for both Europe and the Pacific. So he need someone who was a great organizer/planner and Eisenhower fitted that to a "T". So five months later he was a Major General and three and half months later Lt General and then General in February 1943. He also was promoted to Captain and Major three different time due to down sizing.

Early on it was decided who was going to lead the War. General MacArthur was familiar with the Pacific. Eisenhower was his Cheif of Staff. General Marshall decided along with the War Department....they needed younger officers. More importantly...they wanted general's that could work together. MacArthur recommended Ike. Marshall respected it...and his interview was rough. He could hold his own. Patton. Bradley.Clark all knew each other. The Army was quite small. 100,000 by Treaty. Was about to get a whole lot bigger. 6 million by 1945. Less then 10% saw actually action. Logistics.

First time viewing for me. I enjoyed the 1st Episode. Difficult to fight Hitler when the Allies were fighting each other.

This is a film about Ike during the war - not the War and Ike. Ike is the story. The war is the background scenery

Bradley in this film looks and sounds just like Karl Malden's (sp) Bradley from the film Patton. 😉 And agree romance does not belong in war films as it turns the film into a daytime TV movie like War and Peace etc.
@TedBronson1918
@TedBronson1918 6 ай бұрын
It's not exactly a "war film". It's more of a biopic about Ike's life during the war years, which is an entirely different matter. The so called "romance" has to be included as it was part of his story, though nothing was ever proven. It was all just rumor and innuencdo. The movie dialogue is just that - pure invented dialogue. Some people in the press were always willing to think and write the worst about people they nothing about. It's still going on today.

If the actor you disparage were no longer among us then such an inane comment might be tolerated. As it is, there us no call to put him down with a negative useless comparison.

As much as he achieved militarily, cheating openly for years lessens him considerably as a man. The wife was made to look supremely foolishly , worse so as the world knew and as she did not have the wherewithal innately to divorce the serial cheater.

Well, if Trump gets elected, he'll withdraw the US from NATO. Putin will attack, and likely invade, until most of Europe is in his power; meanwhile, Trump will not intervene - because those countries didn't pay enough - even if NATO is not something countries "pay for." Anyway. After about 4 years, either the US will be attacked directly, or someone else will be elected - and right there, you'll have the situation you want to happen again: the USA forced to fight in a World War that might have been prevented with decisive action in the first invaded country.

@@MariaMartinez-researcherYou actually believe such propaganda? Putin has NO designs on conquering Europe - he has never indicated, in speech, articles, or any other correspondence ANY designs on conquering Europe. To even conceive such a notion automatically triggers WW3, and he recognizes that. And as far as NATO goes, it served its primary function - overseeing the end of the Soviet Union (known then as the USSR) which no longer exists, btw. NATO is an albatross around the neck of the United States as far as foreign policy, but the Military Industrial Complex won't hear of it. There's way too much money to be made in ongoing global conflict, and it's way past time someone ended this madness. But if you're truly worried about Trump taking the U.S. out of NATO, you have nothing to fear. Trump won't do it - he listens to his generals far more than he should, and those 3-letter agencies, you know them as the CIA, NSA, and DOD wouldn't dare allow him to even attempt it, for they control everything, even the presidency.

If you want to watch a less glorified representation of Eisenhower, try "Ike: Countdown to D-Day". It emphasized the team relationship of the Americans and Brits. de Gaulle, not so much. Too often, drama makes allies appear less important than they actually are.

When Darwin Theory made its appearance, the people who wished all these years to be able to deny God, seized it like a maniac, even though his theory is impossible because in the whole of creation it is impossible to make something out of nothing, and to make life out of dead matter. The people who believe like that should go looking for new life when lightning strikes a cemetery because then all the elements are present for creating life according to their tour.
