Our local timber merchant is about half the price of any of the DIY outlets. The wood is far better and they will select the wood for you and cut it to length if you like. I haven't bought timber from any DIY outlet for years but I do go for a look. What I find is warped, split wood at high prices. Same with fixings, Screws, nails and all types of fixings are about one tenth of the price from a fixing supplier than any DIY outlet and better quality.

@@dcjoinerydjdave6100 Agreed....... I was putting up two 236cm Pax wardrobes on my very crumbly brick wall so instead of drilling, plugging and securing at the four points which found bad fixing points, I drilled and plugged a strip of softwood straight across the wall and simply secured the wardrobes onto that. Solid....... Also works on lath and plaster walls if the wood strip is secured to the studs.

@chrisdormer1061. Spoken by someone who has never put an IKEA Pax wardrobe together......... I've just built four 236cm Pax wardrobes and what you say sounds correct but the top and base are chambered at the rear to allow the backing section to sit in tightly. To do as you suggest means turning them upside down with nowhere for the backing to sit into.
