Benin was/is a small chiefdom in what is now Edo south occupying 3 LGAs with a moat dug around it to stop attacks by surrounding Western Ibo settlements. However, in order to challenge and counter European racist claims that Africa had no history, Ibo pan-African scholars led by Kenneth Dike (first black Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan) J C Anene etc. decided to create an empire narrative around Benin.
