My grandfather flew Mosquitoes in the RCAF. He went to BRITAIN, and fought along side the BRITISH RAF. He and his BRITISH RAF navigator were killed August 19, 1943 over western Germany. I visited his grave for the first time at the Reichswald Forest war cemetery earlier this year.

That kill shot at 8:05 in back of the cockpit reminded me of a graphic story I read years ago. Don’t remember details on date or plane but the pilot took a direct hit or two in upper back, blew off his head, one of his arm/shoulder, but the other was still on the stick, somehow the plane managed to crash land/belly skid like so it was relatively intact. The locals soon arrived and probably wasn’t expecting to see what they did inside. Those 20MM rounds were nasty.

In Stanford Tuck’s book when he was on Hurricanes one of his Sqn’s planes was found on top of a forest. The pilot had setup to land but had died as a 20mm had taken top of his skull off. The plane had continued and slid to rest on the trees.

Well done, Taff! A perfectly executed Mosquito hit-and-run raid, shooting down two Fw-190s and not pushing your luck trying to bag the third. Discretion is always the better part of valour. You'll always outrun a 190 in a Mosquito, but if you try to dogfight with him, he will kill you. I think the two you did shoot down were low on fuel and maybe also out of ammo.

I believe Mosquitos could take on single-engine fighters by employing the "Beam Defense Maneuver", more popularly known as the "Thatch Weave", after LTCDR James Thatch, USN, who developed and employed it at the Battle of Midway. In the Thatch Weave, two aircraft, or two sections of two aircraft, fly in a line abreast roughly 400-500 meters apart. Each aircraft or pair scans the area behind the other. When an enemy aircraft is spotted attacking one of the aircraft from behind, the unengaged aircraft turns inward towards the one being attacked. This is the signal for the aircraft under attack to turn inward towards the unengaged aircraft. This sets up the enemy fighter for a head-on attack, which will result either in destroying him or driving him off. The friendly aircraft then turn back onto their base course, having exchanged places. The process can be completed multiple times, until the enemy get discouraged, and it also works if both aircraft are attacked simultaneously, with each shooting the enemy off the other's tail in a head-on pass. Thatch was flying the F4F-4 Wildcat against the A6M2 Zero-sen, a plane that was both faster and more maneuverable. The Thatch Weave negated those individual advantages and exploited the Wildcat's superior firepower and robustness. The Mosquito, with its short nose providing excellent visibility for deflection shooting, and its withering firepower of 4 x .303 machine guns ad 4 x 20mm cannon, all concentrated in the nose, could use the Thatch Weave to defeat whatever combination of German fighters attack it. It simply requires practice and good coordination to be effective.

Excellent episode taff, Eddie James bags 2x FW190 fighters and gets mentioned in despatches.. that's a good enough honor for the exploits he's managed to pull off. Great handling of the Dehavilland Mosquito there taff, you got the name of the game bang on correct, you knew when it was time to flee and the speed of the Mosquito works it's magic. The fighter spirit fed the aggression like a true warrior but all the same, best only take on fighters if they're targets of opertunity like you did today. Great to see an operation in broad daylight, and the historical similarities of actual Mosquito operations we're well performed, nothing better for a Mossie than downing a fighter when it needs to land and getting low and fast when it was time to run, was so much like the real thing. Great episode, looking forward to next week's episode, let's hope that Eddie James gets a good long successful career.. Great series taff, been well worth the wait, you should try more bomber or even fighter bomber campaigns in the future, you'll be excellent at those no question about it. Keep it up mate 👍

Random thought: twins with contra-rotating engines vs. using the same right- hand rotation for both. Contra-rotation tends to balance torque reaction at the expense of directional stability for single-rudder (horizontal stabilizer) twins. Hence the barn-door rudder on the A-20, and the enlargement of the rudder on the later models B-26 Marauder. There is an obvious advantage to using a single direction of rotation: no need to stock two varieties of engine/propeller for the same plane. But it seems like there might be an advantage in handling also. (Mosquito handling having been about the best in the war for a light twin.)

Out there all on your own and you decide to engage multiple enemy (actual, proper) fighters over enemy territory? Are you nuts? I'd figure that your squad mates would welcome you back as a conquering hero, while your CO would berate you in front of them for taking such a fool hardy chance and announce that you are grounded and will do the same to anyone else that takes that kind of chance w/ the King's plane. And later he'd be buying you a pint and swear you to secrecy.
