Il tuo sangue, ed il tuo zelo
from the opera Ariodante, HWV 33 (1735)
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
Richard Croft as Lurcanio
Les Musiciens du Louvre - Marc Minkowski, conductor
Lurcanio is the brother of Ariodante, a prince betrothed to Ginevra, daughter of the King of Scotland. Lurcanio believes her to be unfaithful, because he and his brother witnessed "Ginevra" (actually her lady-in-waiting, Dalinda, wearing Ginevra's clothes) admit Polinesso into her bedroom for the night. After this betrayal, a distraught Ariodante attempts suicide by leaping into the sea. Appearing before the King, Lurcanio, who believes his brother’s suicide is the result of Ginevra’s infidelity, vows revenge in this aria.
Il tuo sangue, ed il tuo zelo,
per la figlia, e per Astrea
gran contrasto or fanno in te.
Ma tu mostra al mondo, al cielo,
ch'in punir la figlia rea
non sei padre, essendo Rè.
Nature does for your daughter plead,
but honor is a bar,
between them both they in your breast
have raised a cruel war.
But proof in this great action bring,
that though you are a father, you’re a king.
