Madame COTRUBAS was a great Singer (1.980) and today (2019) is a great Teacher : she is absolutely right when says the word “PLACE” doesn’t need a PORTAMENTO . When she says this , about PORTAMENTO, you immediatly realize SHE IS A GREAT ARTIST and a GREAT TEACHER !! Unfortunately, today there are no more Artists like her and YOUNG SINGERS , I mean the BEGINNERS , have non possibility to develop their Talents, because there are not good Teachers to give them right suggestions, anymore !! I wish Madame COTRUBAS can still teach for many years , to help beginners to avoid to do horrible Mistakes !!! I remember her MIMÌ opposite PAVAROTTI at TEATRO alla SCALA and her ANTONIA opposite DOMINGO at ROH COVENT GARDEN : she was OVERWHELMING !!!!!!! Thank you so much Mrs COTRUBAS . Thomas .

Hmmmm...

Ileana Cotrubas sung a hole right into the middle of her voice. I saw her at Covent Garden towards the end of her career in La Traviata and while her high notes and coloratura were still there, the rest of her singing was just painful.

Le problème principal de cette élève est la justesse...a-t-elle corrigé cela et fait carrière ? Car le timbre est somptueux

She was a great singer for sure. But she is full of herself. She’s doing a show in this class. Not really ooking at her students when she explains something..I was an extra in an opera back in her golden days. I happened to be alone with her at one moment. I said hello, I am an extra and I admire you a lot, bla bla... She didn’t care to answer. She pretended she didn’t hear and left.

I understand your frustration, but just imagine you might have been the 127th extra saying her, for the 127th time, the same words. What answer would you expect, something like "Oh I see, you're quite right to admire me" ? ;-)

Great singers don't always make great teachers. Tito Gobbi was one exception. I was in a masterclass he gave in London in the early 1970's. He never sang a note, so as not to intimidate the students. He was completely self effacing almost never said the word "I". Singing was only part of the class. He taught not only phrasing and shaping musical lines, but more how to time gestures, how to act with the eyes and facial expressions. To be taught by one of the greatest singing actors of the 20th century, who was also a humble and approachable person, was an unforgettable experience.

G Ulmerton whether she heard you or not we will never know. And one never knows what a person is going through on a day. I don’t think she is full of herself at all. Oh dear, is that all you have.

65NART yes dear, she heard me alright. And yes, that’s what I have to say about her. She was very conscious of her being the star, and the rest of us, being extras or staff members. Have you ever been around her? No, right? So what do you know? Other as great singers as her were very friendly and humble compared to her. That’s how we all saw she was full of herself.

She’s clearly very, very confident - but she has every reason and right to be. Full of herself is exaggerated though. She’s not acting like a selfish diva, she’s helping the students. Sure, she’s a bit extra and we can also see that she knows her value as an artist and as a respected teacher but that’s still not the same as being full of yourself. Except that time you met her - that sucks really. But then again, we all act stupidly sometimes. Maybe she was tired and just hopes that you assumed she didn’t hear you. That’s also a possibility though unless you clearly had an eye contact with her.
