Love Karl Schudt! Been listening The Great Books Online podcast for years! Love if Scott could have been on this pod to add some Oklahoma attitude

Thank you for the video. I just started reading the Iliad. Which quote from Victor Hugo did Dr. Karl Schudt reference? Is it from Les Misérables? I'm excited for the next 21 videos and the Odyssey video podcasts next!

I think another reason why achilles might get a pass on watching his countryman die and Paris does not, is that paris can be perceived as responsible for the war. Whether or not he had agency is unclear (being that everyone to some extent are pawns of the gods) but to me it seems like his fellow trojans percieve him as culpable for the whole mess. So we have a guy who's super lame in battle and he gets whisked away by Aphrodite herself to enjoy the comforts of a woman, and everyone just has to be cool with it and fight. Mean while Achilles is just choosing to ask the Gods to put the greeks in a position where they will notice his absence; and hes doing this because he was spurned by Agemmenon. Unlike Paris, Achilles didnt bring this conflict to the greeks. Thats my thought on it anyway. Thanks again for the discussion. Looking forward to the next.

So we think that 🍩 Homer 🍩 was a real person? Not an amalgamation not anything like that?

There's room for both sides of the argument. We tend to lean towards Homer being a real person.
