Welcome to the world of TJ Wranglers, the last real Jeep made. There are spindles with bushings in the transmission area. You should check to ensure the noise was not coming from there. Expect to spend some $$ to keep it looking good. I have a 2001 Sahara 4.0L, that I will never part company with. Next you should beef it up by putting on a 3" lift kit with some fat tires. No bigger that 35". Get BDS suspension lift kit with JKS adjustable control arms (upper and lower). They are beefy. Next are some Tom Woods driveshafts both front and rear. Get a real good SYE (Ten Factory, TeraFlex, Tom Woods or Alloy USA). This kit ensures that you'll not have drooping transmission skid plate but a proper tummy tuck! Next re-gear the axles with 4.56 (Yukon, Motive, or Alloy USA). Get an upgraded Detroit Locker. Don't skimp on the gears and internal components. You want good quality steel. Now you'll have the serious look of a Wrangler TJ. Change out the 4x4 contraption that Jeep came up with for low friction transfer case shifter (Novak Adapter) that engages your 4 wheel drive effortlessly. Once you do the above you'll keep your Jeep for the next 100 years!

Re: the Transmission Mount, I'd say check the engine mounts too. When you're in drive or reverse, there is drivetrain load on both the engine and transmission, so it could be your engine shaking the transmission as well.

I would look at motor mounts, and also all u-joints in the rear driveshaft. The fact it only makes noise when in gear under load suggests there’s movement in the drive line somewhere. Also check exhaust interfering somewhere. Just thoughts.
@robertfenton14999 ай бұрын
Also happened to think, I’ve had best luck with the actual rubber mount from Jeep rather than polyurethane mounts from daystar and the like.

I don't recommend a urethane mounts they can squeak and rattle. It could be because you replace just the transmission mount. The two engine mounts are slightly lower than your new transmission mount, causing your whole drive train to shake. I recommend replacing your engine mounts as well. P.S. Before replacing any mounts get a grease gun and egressing the universal joints.

I'm going off what I know about Subarus. On a side note, I bought a shop battery powered light bar to work on my 2006 Forester and it changed my life. I carry extra cam and crank sensors just in case I'm in the middle of nowhere and can't start. If they haven't been replaced, that could be the problem. If not you have extra to take with you. I'm guessing they are extremely easy to swap out on the old Jeep, like 2-3 minutes. If it's like a high frequency vibration, it could the be torque converter related. Or maybe try changing to differential fluid. That's probably the cheapest and it's routine; anyone can do it. If it's more of a shaking feeling mostly while in reverse, it could be old motor mounts. There are Chilton's manuals available specific for the Jeep.

Isn't it fun owning an old vehicle? Good thing is you get to know your vehicle when you start fixing things yourself. Some nozzles you can adjust them with a small tool like a flathead. As for your transmission issue....maybe the bushings for the transmission mounts need to be replaced. I had a somewhat similar issue on my Montero when I first got it. I replaced the mounts and it solved the issue.

I had a dodge neon (also mopar) that used to do that and there were engine mounts on the passenger side of the car (3 I think, an upper, lower and middle) that had bad bushings. Basically the rubber in the middle gets old and cracks and allows enough play to cause a vibration. You don’t feel it as much when the engine is under load (in drive) but when you’re idling you feel it. I’d have em checkout the other mounts in addition to the trans mount. Two are dog bone mounts (they’re long like bones) and the middle one is more square and mounted to the sidewall and engine on the passenger side in the middle (hardest to get to)

Link that camping light please! 😍 also, I know that jeep life, its rough lol. We've had 5 different wranglers in the past 10yrs ranging from a 1985-2014 and they've all been WORK to maintain and keep the check engine light off. My husband is the one who's done the work on all of our jeeps and I hope to learn more just like you are! Just learned how to change the spark plugs and o2 sensors this last month 😆
@darthliv9 ай бұрын
Also, my jeep is jumping when idling rn too, and we haven't figured it out. We changed o2 sensors, spark plugs, ignition coils, but we keep getting a diagnostic for misfiring spark plugs even after changing 🫠 same 2 plugs too.

This is amazing you both DIY! Gotta get on your level! My engine light just came on last night and the OBD2 reader says it's a misfire in cylinder 3. Literally just had coil packs replaced, but it's misfiring again, so could be another issue causing it. Lawddd! This money pit! Good luck with your Jeep!
