Ilkley Moor: Fire control, Heather regeneration and Moorland management

In 2006 a fire swept across Ilkley Moor, fanned by winds, it took eight days to control and left an area of 400 acres devastated. The fire had burnt through the peat to the gritstone, leaving it vulnerable to wind and water erosion without any top cover. Not only that, the heather protected ground nesting birds like the grouse and plover. This video looks at the restoration work and how it could be responded to again in the future.

Long heather and public all over the moor. Just what the government whats sooooo . . . . .

Why not use deer to cut back the old heather? Use trees to break the wind and stop it blowing away the moisture from the area.

revisited, bruce. there still at it. burning at will in 't west riding, where i live. they do it "COS THEY CAN", WITH IMPUNITY !!. ( apologies for the "sleight", but i senced a bit of "naivety" about ya. nothing personal, r'kid.)
