The minute Alex said God wasn't who he needed I knew what was going to happen and I was like this is damn stupid. It's ruining my play. It's ruining Lin's genius. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Moreover, as a Christian, if you know your Bible, Christ is love and we're followers of Christ. That means love everyone. Gay, straight, whatever. Don't manipulate things, people, tragedies (like the death of Hamilton's son), the work of Lin Miranda for your own agenda. My Bible says that everything I do, I should do out of love. The best part of them shoehorning their homophobic agenda into this is the irony of them keeping the “Laurens, I like you a lot” line in My Shot which was a direct reference to Hamilton’s “alleged” (though we all know he totally was) bisexuality and the “alleged” affair that he and Laurens had. ALSO Hamilton quite literally has a come to Jesus moment in It’s Quiet Uptown when he says “I take the children to church on Sunday, a sign of the cross at the door, and I pray. That never used to happen before”. THEY DIDN’T NEED TO ADD THAT RANDOM PART OF THE PASTOR MAKING HIM ACCEPT JESUS. WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE???
@elly_hermione2 жыл бұрын
Well, even though the line about Laurens in My Shot is a huge wink-wink, it still can be easily interpreted as just an expression of sympathy, in totally "no homo" way. I mean, did Hamilton like Laurens? Yes! Did he like him as a friend? Obviously - even though there might had been something more, Laurens was his friend anyway. So, I think it's not weird that they kept it even when they had homophobic agenda. But yeah, the irony is nice.
@h.g.warrender55292 жыл бұрын
ALSO when they added a line for Eliza in Who Lives Who Dies, the line they added was: "I introduce hundreds of children to Jesus as they're growing up" . @amandaturner49912 жыл бұрын
I had the exact same thought... Fervently scanned the comments to see if someone else had caught it too.. one, the line always gives me goosebumps. Two, real-life Hams said it. Three, they could have used it to reference back to scripture. Four (relates to two), a lot of the magic of Hamilton is that it brought history to life and made it relevant to people who never cared about it before (honestly). It made people fact check and look into things like "who are the Schuyler sisters?" "did Washington release his slaves when he died?" "did the presidential candidate runner up used to be vice president?" "why is Jonathan Groff's mouth so dang moist?"(just making questions up off of the top of my head, lol) Their version doesn't cause people to think about these questions or dig deeper into our history..

I remember the 5th graders of a local elementary school putting on Hamilton for their friends and family. They didn't charge admission, they wanted to do it because they were into Hamilton. They filtered out a couple of swears+some songs because its a hella long show for like 20 5th graders, but they didn't try to make it into religious propaganda or something like that.(sorry if "propaganda" sounds harsh i cant think of a better word at the time of writing this) Is that illegal? Does anyone know? Idk i'd just heard of this and remembered that show.
@-insertpunchlinehere-2 жыл бұрын
So, I am not a legal expert, but I say if it was illegal, it was not the rule breaking show like the church's was 1. Profiting off of content that you do not have the licensing to is a big no no. Because the school did not charge admission, it makes it more ethical than charging money to put on a show without rights. 2. They changed a lot of content in tbe church version. If the school kept it the same minus a couple songs and swears, that is a better representation of the show versus changing the show and altering the purpose/messaging while having the name still attached. If someone random thought the church's version was the actual version someone who didn't like it may out the show in a bad light. That is not to say that the school technically did it legally, but it seems harmless compared to charging money and changing the show. At the end of the day, legality comes after larger scale productions that hit the media and profit off the scenario

There’s whether it is ethically right and then there is whether it is legally right. If you don’t pay for the rights, putting on the show for free does not matter, you have broken copyright. I do hate that they did that because it eradicates her importance in the story at the end of the show. Eliza is the one who survives Hamilton, she is the one to tell his story, who created the orphanage, the one who was there with him. Without Eliza there wouldn't be a Hamilton, and the fact that they simply changed it all to a religious propaganda certainly feels patriarchal and demining to her, making it seem like she isn't important at all, she was simply a wife. The whole part where the guy was telling Hamilton what happened may not have happened if he did other things is very accurate. I was raised in the church and most times something bad happened people would say it was my fault. When someone child ended their life some of the people blamed the parents saying it’s what happened since the parents stopping coming to church while their kid still did. It’s messed up.

I was Catholic for a good while before I transitioned into paganism and it basically elevated me more than God ever could. I do pray to other gods, but I confess I still sometimes work with the angels and the saints which were the most harmless part of the whole Catholicism. The rest, once you're enlightened, you find out pretty quick that it's frighteningly easy to turn what they denounce as evil. If you're ashamed, maybe that's a sign that it's not as good as it looks like

12:10 How DARE they say ‘If you don’t worship ‘God’ you’re child might DIE!’ 😤 Why would you ever say something like that (play or otherwise) to a GRIEVING PARENT?! 😡
@amandaturner49912 жыл бұрын
I am also really confused and appalled by this. I mean, by the whole play, but specifically this. I'm a Christian, but more importantly, a HUMAN and nowhere in my mind would it ever dawn on me to say something like that to someone -- or to scare or manipulate them into going to church or coming to God. That's not scriptural. It's disgusting. I felt like vomiting when I saw that. I remember reading somewhere that there's no words for losing a child and that's why Lin called it "going through the unimaginable". So, to take someone when they're going through something that has no words and kick them when they're down???? ... Do you know when the federalist party is asking who has Hamilton's vote - Jefferson or Burr - and he's like, "it's quiet uptown" -- I think 9 years have passed from Phillip's death and he's still like, "it's quiet uptown", he's still not over it. In the context of the play he probably blames himself for Phillip's death already -- he was defending Alexander's honor and Alex told him to shoot in the air. To come at him and say, this was your fault because you weren't right with God. Nah, that's not the role of the church when someone is grieving. That is only the role of the church who is intent on achieving their own personal (church) agenda and unfortunately there are too many of those out there..

Forget changing lyrics, the rights aren't out and won't be out for years, as a high school theatre techie there are plenty of amazing shows I want to to but won't probably get the chance to put on because getting the rights to a lot of these shows is near impossible, and actually impossible if the show is still on broadway. There is actually a difference between monetized rights and demonetized rights, monetized being you can sell tickets, demonized being you can't.The rights for Hamilton though are not out at all. And from the look of their set/costuming they had a good sized budget too. Such a waste, they could have put on an amazing show without stealing intellectual property. This is why we can't have nice things!

That is what the Pastor was referring to. Not the whole thing which they never got permission for if you look into the details.
