I got the chance to record the simulcast off radio as a teen. The only time Genesis ever played their solo material, it was a fitting tribute to the incredible contribution of these artists both solo and combined. I just wish I could have been there to see it in person. 😮

I think if it wasn't for Invisible Touch, many of us Genesis "super-fans" would never have had heard of them. Its only because of that album that a friends dad said to his kid "you think this is good? I've got some of their old stuff too". And he got a friend hooked who got me hooked. Their "Sellout" stuff gave so many more people access to their amazing music - early and late. And although Im not a fan of all of their radio-friendly stuff, I think most of its better than the cuts of From Genesis to Revelation. Thanks for the upload!

The reason there's no keyboard in the mix is because this recording is in mono with only one of the stereo channels, the keyboards were mostly present on the other channel.

@@amandabooth7399 Hi Amanda... it's certainly interesting to receive a reply to a comment I made 8 years ago. I'm not sure why you think I'm complaining. Like I said, I was at this show and was I just wanted whoever was interested to know that the entire concert was about 14 hours long. It was in 1988 but I remember it like it was yesterday. This medley was about half of Genesis' set, which made it one of the longer sets of the show. Phil also had a solo set. They were one of the highlights for me, along with Yes and Average White Band. Here's a link to AWB performing Pick Up the Pieces from this show: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4GmkqGhbtCbgpo, a few highlights from Yes' set kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJO2f3imh5WGfLc, kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppCxpJKuaLh4qM0 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/qn7VXqmDgrB2eMk. @@davidrydell9731 I don't know anyone who was actually at this gig, (even on the internet;) what a monumental lineup. Are you industry or just lucky to get tickets? Not the best Zep showing but you saw them (!) it was better than Live Aid set though. Genesis had been off the road almost a year at this point (I think?) this is only one of two gigs that happened between Invisible touch and we can't dance tours, special night. God bless 🙏

@@TheChadTI No, I'm not in the industry, I'm a computer programmer... at the time I was consulting at Citibank about a block away and the day before the show a coworker and I called a broker and got tickets delivered to us. As I recall, the ticket cost $100. It was a little known fact but Madison Square Garden always held back some tickets for all shows (including sold out) for sale that day. I used to walk up the the box office and get excellent seats in the morning for a bunch of concerts

@Amanda Booth I like most Genesis and Gabriel... this was the only time I ever saw Genesis so I was happy they played, but my impression at the time was they played most of the songs too fast. I only saw Gabriel once - it was at the same venue (Madison Square Garden) in 1993, and it was one of the best concerts I ever attended. Here's a link to a full show from the same tour, the set list is almost identical - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2fEnJ6ajrKMmLc

Turn it on again live is appalling, on every video I see. Really cant explain why, but for me the album version is gritty and powerful, yet when its played live its like a pantomime song to cheer the crowd up.

I’m with you on that. It’s always performed well but the Duke version has a drive that has never been captured live, even early on (3 Sides Live). Phil’s kick drum pattern really pushes it, while driving the taurus bass pedal groove. I’ve always felt the same about “Abacab”, as well. The original had this gritty drive to it that was never matched live, although the instrumental section on the live arrangements were smokin’.
