We have had mainline trap and EDM trap done to death by BIGBANG and Blackpink, but never plugg. NewJeans' producers use R&B a lot and jersey club genre in dance music. 250 and Duckbay have previously worked at SM and founded BANA. SM producers don't know much about the hip-hop genre as Pdogg and Slow Rabbit do from Big Hit. BTS was mainly a hip-hop group from the debut. Slow Rabbit is illit's main producer and the genius behind plugg for Magnetic. They were going to be different from Enhypen since they competed a lot on hip-hop in ru next. Le Sserafim is very EDM/R&B based because their main producer unit, 13, specialize in those genres. Plugg and phonk are specifically hard to make group music of since it focus more on melodies than vocals. So hats off to Slow Rabbit for pulling off with plugg with all vocal chomping (bae bae bae bae, dash-dash-da) and merge it with vocals in the whole song. Hip-hop genre has extended over the years with different subgenres and fusions so it's not mainly about live vocals doing rap. Plugg is a major example of that. But I also saw complaints from some korean SM stans in spring who claimed this is what brings down kpop's talent. Not at all, it's thinking outside of the box. SM producers don't know what that means since they plagiarize from other Western artists' work. If they want mainly live vocals there are cloud rap, drill and g-funk. Also subgenres from hip-hop never used in kpop. But it has to fit with the group's identity. Cloud rap is a subgenre from trap so it's hazy, dreamlike and relaxed production style. Someone who has dreamcore as its identity fits cloud rap and Minju is a aggressive rapper. Go watch weekly idol when she raps Lisa's part in As if it's your last.
