Wonhee makes perfect sense for their concept. Maybe the company already have this all planned out before the show that's why they didn't go all in on power vocalists. Everyone were mad at Wonyoung too in the beginning of Izone, look at her now. 🤷‍♂

I feel like the survival show was just a marketing strategy for them to have more publicity so I believe all the members were already chosen before it even started and it made a huge impact by gaining a lot of attention to haters. It's possible they already had the concept, but I don't think they planned to debut Wonhee for that concept specifically. The earliest screen time that Wonhee got made her look like a bit of a joke (overplaying mistakes MNET style, cartoon noises over her dancing, etc.) and her judge scores were always low-mid. She was almost entirely saved by votes the entire show. They might have realized her popularity and switched during the course of the show, but when I rewatched it twice (I'm not well haha), it was really hard to see the "favoritism" that is often claimed online.

i was a huge wonhee defender because of the parallels that i saw with her hate train and bahiyyih's and as a huge hiyyihlight who had to experience gp 999 finale in real time AND the runext finale, i felt really protective of them both. i'm glad that people are receiving her well! and yes you are right, she was never untalented! she just needed a bit more experience on the stage but she shines now

@@FrameTactics i mean, that happens in every kpop group though. the first thing companies think of is the look of the group and who would fit more in their concept. just look at someone like kazuha. she fit the look so she was added into lsfm despite not having any training at all while ruka was kicked out despite being trained. or with beomgyu in txt, he had barely walked into the building before getting added to the group with no training. i don't mind it since the end product is always really good. i just assume the people getting paid for this actually have an eye for it and know what they're doing.

@@FrameTactics I don't think there is evidence of this at all. When you looked at the judges scores, the most talented were at the top and Wonhee was always scored low-mid. She was completely saved by fan votes. Her earliest screen time was honestly mean and made her a joke - overplaying mistakes, cartoon noises over her dancing, etc. It's possible they got behind her during the course of show when seeing her popularity but you can not convince me they planned to debut her from the first few episodes without concrete evidence. The only person who I could be convinced was planned from the beginning is Iroha, because while she is extremely talented, she had the fall in Given Taken, the mistakes later in Bang and was a weaker vocalist and was not docked by judges really for any of that. Her scores were among the highest the entire show. She was also picked by the agency and not voted in during the finale.

I loved this debut! I watched and voted through RUN and WH and MK were my top picks so I was pretty happy with the lineup and WH has definitely improved a lot since the show! I did watch the live showcase on YT though and there was… mm, a lot of hate in the live chat. I tried not to interact but there were so many people not even comparing them to NewJeans but just straight out calling Illit bad imitations, flops, etc. I ended up just closing the chat completely. By the time it was over and I checked in again there were a bunch of people on both sides putting a tick mark and x on their respective preferred group and I’m kind of worried about potential fan wars and toxicity. Actually, scratch that, I KNOW there’s gonna be a lot. The Illit fandom is going to get mad and defensive- and rightfully so- about the toxic NJ fans crashing the live chat party for the freaking DEBUT showcase. Except, like all fandoms, it’s likely going to go overboard fighting back and then NJ fans will probably retaliate and then it’s just going to be a fucking shitshow. I REALLY hope this won’t affect the girls too much but seeing as this is Kpop and Kpop fandoms we’re talking about, my hopes are not high. (Edit for correcting autocorrect 😅)

I know that I'm a few weeks late on the comments here but here's my 2 cents. I never watched R U Next and I found this group through my recommendations and one thing that I have seen from the live stage performances is that Wonhee is going to be a star. She has been standing out to me in most of their performances/clips. This album has been on repeat for me ever since I started hearing it. ILLIT and RESCENE (go listen to YoYo) are my two standouts for GGs debuts so far.

I've been seeing a lot of comments dragging the girls as NewJeans copycats and on the one hand I **kind of** get it? But on the other hand - the much bigger more important hand - ILLIT definitely has their own unique flavour to them that sets them apart. After listening to the rest of the album, I can safely say they've got their own awesome thing going on. Especially 'Midnight Fiction'. Holy shit, I would inject that song intravenously into my arm if I could.

The show was badly produce, the people that run the show are different from people that produce music for the group, their aims are completely different. Side note people like to clown Mnet all they want but they know how to do good entertaining survival show, they got it down to a science that others are having a tough time copying. One other fact people keep forgetting it was in house (only 1 label) survival show which means public votes don't matter (they said it), they could have done the whole thing behind closed door but they want tv promotion before the group is form (can be debated whether that was a good idea or not), and the creative team already have a concept in mind before the show, so the outcome was the outcome. Now I really like the song, it reminds me GWSN and Loona, just dreamy anime girl vibe.

Yeah, Dream Academy was one of my more frustrating experiences, I kept picking a fave and they were always next to go or voluntarily leave. On top of that ppl on Reddit are mostly happy wity the final group and I honestly think the best contestant didn't make it due to legitimately bad political takes or jokes in poor taste (to put it mildly.) People also were gushing over Manon which I never understood other than she's really pretty? But I thought she was pretty bad tbh. Like she should've been last of everyone on the show 😬 But I totally get anyone wanting the group to be inclusive, I just got an icky feeling from it because it was clear much more talented people were let go instead of her. Also, part of the obsession with her was people thought some of the criticisms about her missing practice for covid were unfair and they assumed other contestants bragging about not missing practice while sick was a slight towards her...? But hopefully she improves, and I wish I was looking forward to Katseye like other people, the competition kinda left a bad taste, though.

Being around better people can improve them especially if they aren't otherwise malicious in person. But kpop is a different beast, ppl need to come in having a spotless record of saying the right things publicly without accusations, real or not.

@@NickaLah My opinion is that those views were unfortunately part of her identity and the two could not be easily severed. She is a Christian Zionist. She has some really fundamentalist ideals of Christianity, like those who aren't of faith or other faiths are satanic, which would have been complicated in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious group. She also believes in end-time prophecies, which happen to both be Zionist and also antisemitic. And my biggest concern is that we'd be giving her a platform to proselytize from, which would have made me beyond uncomfortable.

RUNext was the most frustrating show EVER, especially near the end. Their criteria was just so weird and not consistent at all. It pissed me off how the judges would find just about anything to bash the most talented trainees so they’d get low ranks. Like Jiwoo got so much shit and was called too old when she was only 21 and an AMAZING performer. Still pisses me off thinking about it
