Idk, i feel like the whole “the golden age is right now due to the access of the past” angle really is such a cop out for every form of media. It’s similar to what some people say whenever the topic of the golden age of certain music genres comes up. “The golden age is now, you can listen to everything you want, whenever you want!” As cool as that is…No, we are not in the golden age of rock music just because you can go on Spotify and listen to Aerosmith’s discography.

Indeed. The more legitimate invocation of “golden age” in an art form happens when the art is being CREATED at a golden rate or period of marked excellence. That’s my take. Or else, is it the golden era of renaissance painting, given that we now have access to 100% of those era paintings that will ever be appreciated again?

Game Pass Ultimate for a year costs me $270 So basically 2 games is a year of Game Pass and I get to play Avowed South of Midnight Exbedition 33 Doom The Outer Worlds 2 Fable Call of Duty Plus way more Just those games alone would cost me $785 to buy on my PS5 and I’d have to spend another $95 for PS+ for online play. Australia is a first world country and I make quite a bit more than the average income, but if I can save $1000 a year on a hobbie why wouldn’t I choose to do that?

The 2000s are clearly the Golden Age of videogames and it's not even close. The titles that released were revolutionary, both in tech and game design. Just look: Deus Ex, Diablo 2, Perfect Dark, Metal Gear Solid 2, GTA 3, Halo CE, Silent Hill 2, Metroid prime, Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty, Max Payne, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, World of Warcraft, Metal Gear Solid 3, Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Battlefield 2, Oblivion, Gears of War, BioShock, Portal, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, Crysis, Uncharted 1, Mass Effect, Team Fortress 2, Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, GTA 4, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space, Uncharted 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Demon's Souls, COD MW2, Minecraft, Borderlands, League of Legends, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2, Fallout New Vegas. Pulled up just from Google's quick summary of each year, all of these are STILL considered the staple, get mentioned in all the "best games ever" rankings, and they get remade/remastered ad infinitum. The most of the biggest games today are usually sequels/spiritual successors to the games mentioned that started it all, and these are just the most prominent as I excluded franchises like Splinter Cell, Far Cry, Ratchet and Clank, Gothic, Infamous, Jak and Daxter and many more which are still iconic till this day, just not the legendary status as the ones above. I bet many people would end up agreeing implicitly just by making them talk about games for a bit. So many of game design tropes, plot lines, mechanics and so much of the structure template today still copy/take from these genuinely *revolutionary* games that started it all. Spanning two console generations of PS2/PS3 and Xbox/Xbox 360, it reflects both of the worlds that split gaming's history with online etc., as well as the transition itself. In later gens we get excellent games, but if you're honest with yourself, nothing even touches this slew of industry-setters.

Every decade has a long list of iconic classics and there have been only four full gaming decades so far: 80's, 90's, 00's and the 2010's. I just think many games on that list were considerably improved on in the 2010's. Bloodborne > Demon's Souls, Witcher 3 > Witcher, Skyrim > Oblivion, GoW 2018 > GoW 1, AC Odyssey > AC1, Far Cry 3 > Crysis, Portal 2 > Portal, RDR2 > RDR1, Borderlands 2 > BL1, GTA V > GTA IV, Overwatch > Team Fortress 2, TLoU > Uncharted 1 & 2, RE7 VR > RE4, Battlefield 3 > BF 2, Death Stranding > MGS 2, Dishonored > og Deus Ex. Fallout New Vegas was released in 2010, so that's a 2010's game. Some games on your list weren't surpassed in the following decade, but overall I'd take the 2010's over the 2000's. My favorite gaming decade is either the 90's or the 2010's.

@radekseky45714 күн бұрын
@ I completely agree, and this was a part of my point. Many of these revolutionary titles were improved on (sometimes massively), yet that's exactly what I think caused the enormous stagnation in a truly new and creative game design. People constantly try to improve on the Souls formula, they all want to create the "new Skyrim", to go bigger and better than what's come *before* and that I think is the problem. The 2000s were a spark of creativity and pushing of limits. Very few titles from 2010s or 2020s so far have come close to what Half Life 2 or Bioshock achieved as *the pioneers* of their little respective sub-genres they created. And of course to clarify, we are talking about the AAA scene here, really. Plenty of awesome unique stuff happening in the indie scene.
@Marcus_K4 күн бұрын
@@radekseky4571 The '00s probably were a more creative decade than the 2010's. Most of the creativity in the 2010's came from VR and the proliferation of indies. Quality matters also though. I think the improved quality of games and their storytelling in the 2010's led to many successful movie and TV adaptations and to games being taken more seriously as an artistic medium. The '90s were also a tremendously creative decade. Many of these genres like the FPS, the cinematic or military FPS, the 3D action-adventure, survival horror, stealth, the immersive sim, the open-world game, the MMO, the hack'n slash dungeon crawler, the Metroidvania and the post-apocalyptic adventure have their roots in the '90s.

In terms of the argument for why get an Xbox over a PS5 at this point (or even a PC), I will say that 2025 is legitimately the first year where being a Game Pass (Ultimate) subscriber is actually worth your money if you are someone who plays a lot of new release games. Ninja Gaiden had very light exploration and ability to roam and each Ninja Gaiden after that stripped that away bit by bit and made them more screen to screen action games.

I’m own both PS5 and an Xbox, and I use my Xbox for gamepass. I don’t need to buy COD and Indiana Jones. I look at the Xbox as a secondary console for gamepass if you own other consoles.

Not sure if anyone will see this, but in regard to the person asking the question about entertainment journalism: I feel like the individual creator/youtube thing won’t be around forever. The main reason I’m still on KZbin is because of the work that I do. I find as time goes on I am starting to not care as much about KZbin/twitch. I wonder when that will start to fall too.

How was Hulst demotet when his position was unchanged? He had Totoki above him, now he reports to Nishino who became the SIE CEO. Saying there was nobody above him is false. But this doesent change the fact that there are some serious issues with the direction of SIE and Hulst has more to do with it than Nishino.

Ps5 outselling Ps4 in USA doesn’t prove that console market growing. Yes usa is biggest market but just 15%. China is behind usa’s ass. And in china, korea and japan people don’t give shit about consoles. It is all pc and mobile. Nintendo has some presence.

Games are not a "service." They are independent artistic creations and must be recognized and compensated as such. They aren't some utility you pay a monthly fee for to have a constantly refreshing, revolving door of content puke out of your TV screen and speakers like water out of a faucet. Neither are films or music, by the way. If you expect your games to come to you like a service you pay a monthly fee for, then expect the games you get to be tasteless and homogenous... just like water out of a faucet. There is no grey area here: you either recognize that games are art, or have confused them with a monthly utility. They can't be both.

I don't understand your obsession with why I shouldn't buy an Xbox when there are so many amazing reasons And believe it or not, I'm not that toxic. First of all, you put way too much emphasis on owning games. It's not something I personally care about; the same is true for most modern gamers. Secondly, Game Pass is incredible, and using it on the Xbox is without a doubt the best experience. I play Game Pass on TV, PC, and cloud, and it simply isn't as good as the console experience. The sheer amount of incredible games that have come to Game Pass, and are yet to come, is mind-blowing and something Sony could consider, as they have completely lost their way. Lastly, there's the family aspect, which is again linked to Game Pass. Myself and my kids have access to a plethora of amazing games at our fingertips for a tiny fee. Again, I don't care that I don't own them... but guess what? I can buy whatever I want on Xbox because, believe it or not, they still sell games... ask Sony fans.

You'd be a shoe-in for a modern corporate gaming exec... not sure if you can speak for modern gamers though

Sony is also an insurance company. At the end of the day, they’re going to be conservative and course correct. Except for Crunchyroll they don’t even have a dedicated streaming service. They sold Crackle and they license out their content. With this leadership change I do think there was a conversation with shareholders that they’re making changes. I’m also not totally sure about Herman’s future. One thing I know about Japanese business is they politely fire you. The company will just take more and more responsibility away in hopes the person just leaves. This all goes into effect late spring/early summer right?

As a fan of trophies I have believed the trophy system has been broken since the beginning but destroyed by the bargain bin platinums. Even mainstream games dont usually put thought into their trophies. Unfortunately, without curation its an unimportant system. Any meaning comes from the indivudual's applied parameters. Playstation Stars has the potential to be a superior replacement giving attention to new releases and older games alike along with tangible rewards.

3:32:35: Also you forgot to mention if Gamepass was such a system seller, why isn't the system selling? Not only did they shoot themselves in the foot by saying "You don't need our console" they then proceed to push their only saving grace that is gamepass on it. So the console doesn't sell, then gamepass subscriptions decline, and then revenue falls. Rinse and repeat.

Colin saying there's no reason to buy an Xbox is pretty disingenuous. He names Gamepass, which is a reason, immediately trumping his own point. Even says he subscribes to movies and can't blame someone for doing that with games. Despite the "traditional" way of buying games, it used to be tradition to buy movies. Most people don't do that anymore. Traditions change. A few other reaosns are double entitlements on purchases, the expansion of their ecosystem across multiple devices, the console experience of the Series vs PS5 being a bit better if we're being honest. There just isn't value there for Colin, which is 100% fine. Everyone perceives value differently. Nor am I saying he doesn't make valid points about Xbox going 3rd party and how that strengthens PS's pitch. But to say there's no reason to buy an Xbox in a year where they're releasing the lineup of games they have slated, all dropping on a service that costs $250 a year, is accessibile from multiple devices, and would cost 3x that in comparable purchases on PS5 (accessible form no where else), is incredibly disingenous. It almost comes off like Colin is afraid this is all going to work out for Xbox in some sick fashion. That said, I'm very interested if we see any bump in console sales and Gamepass subs with this 2025 lineup cause if not then Colin's got nothing to be afraid of lol.

Am I missing something here?? This is coming from a genuine place. I get that the PS5 console is selling well, but it doesnt seem like software is selling the same way as last gen on the platform and sequels to big titles aren't hitting the same way (not that they're selling bad terrible), 3rd party exclusive games on the platform dont seem to be selling tremendously well (not terrible), and Sony doesn't sell their consoles with high margins. I'm in agreement that their first party output lacking is not the end of the world at the moment. But as we do eventually move into a more "platform/ecosystem/app" world - wouldn't their output begin to matter more and more?? Hardware based devices in a lotnof categories have been seeing lower and lower numbers of sales. People used to buy new Smartphones every other year if not yearly, we used replace laptops regularly, my TVs have been chugging along for years. At some point, console hardware sales will slow even if it's only due to more and more people needing to upgrade to the next console especially if what you get on the next console, and the next console, progressively decline. Am I missing something?? This is coming from a genuine place.

As of May 2024 the Ps5 had generated 106 billion in revenue over a 4 year life cycle. For comparison the ps4 generated 107 billion over 7 years. So not only are console sales up but they matched the revenue of the previous generation in almost half the time. Outside of nintendo releases, the sony ecosystem basically makes up the remaining majority of console software sales. 30% of every dollar spent on their store adds up, and new Microsoft games coming to the console will help both companies in that respect. I can see how it feels like games don't sell as much anymore, but the money is still being spent. It's just concentrated in fewer games than it used to.
@marcushankins81717 күн бұрын
Yes games are selling extremely well. You’re only hearing about some games not meeting expectations because that’s what gets clicks now a days and also companies largely over budgeted their games during covid because of the covid boom and set their expectations way too high.
