In this Adobe Illustrator tutorial, I show how to create a desert landscape in the style of flat design! This illustrator flat design tutorial contains a fair amount of detail but nothing over complicated, which makes it suitable for all levels of graphic designers. 1. Get a color palette and set it up outside of your artboard with values from light to dark. 2. Make the sky using a gradient between 2 light colors. 3. Click randomly with the pen tool, making sure to get perfect vertical lines, make this the lightest value. Click on the shape you've made, then click on the direct selection arrow, (white one) and round off the corners by dragging in the circle on the corners. 4. Continue this step, for every closer and closer object, make it darker and darker. 5. Select each shape + the sky layer (which should be the exact same size as your artboard. Click on the shapebuilder tool, hold alt and then click on the parts of the shape that lie outside of the artboard. 6. Create a circle for the sun, make it a light yellow color, place it behind the mountains, but in front of the sky. 7. Create larger copies of the sun, move it behind the original and lower the opacity down to around 25%, do this again but with even lower opacity. 8. Create clouds with random circles, create a cutoff point with a rectangle or line and then use the shape builder tool to cut off the bottom part of the cloud, lower the opacity and stretch them horizontally on the sky. 9. Create cacti with random grids of squares and rectangles, combine them into a single shape with either the shapebuilder tool or the pathfinder window, select the corners with the direct selection tool (white cursor) and round them off with the circle on the corners. 10. Match these cacti to the color of the ground that they lie on. (darker closer up) 11. Create ferns with crescent shapes, shapebuilder tool, blah blah blah... Combine them together at different angles and then repeat step 10. 12. Stars are pretty straight forward, a lot of small circles. 13. Shooting stars are pen tool to make a tall but thin triangle, create a circle at the bottom so that the bottom corners of the triangle match up with the sides of the circle, combine the shapes and adjust accordingly.

Just slow it down and pause the video at places where you can't follow what is going on. That is what I did. It is a tutorial. I learn by practice and this helped me understand the different tools which were being used and allowed me to practice with them.

Illustrator doesn't require an explanation of what's going on, most pieces done in the software use the same few components and techniques, all of which are visually located in the UI.

You just create squares with the rectangle tool in the desired colors. It's something you're done with in about 10-20 seconds. But it is very useful, that's for sure!

Astrid Emeralda Those are just squares draw with the Marquee Tool (M). If you use the Eyedropper Tool (I), you can sample colors from any shape and use the color on another shape. It’s really useful!

When you select a shape that have corners with the the white arrow(direct selection tool) a white little circle will appear on each corner, just select one and drag it all corners will be round. Regards.

If you're referring to the big swatches aka squares next to the artwork. Just use the rectangle tool in the desired colors. Nothing too hard really, just something useful.

Runi Prams use rectangle or ellipse tool and make a circle or rectangle of your choice in size, then copy paste a few times and use the eye dropper tool with the color codes provided.
