Industrial Light & Magic Visual Effects Supervisor Tim Alexander and Digital Environments Supervisor Dan Wheaton discuss the effects challenges presented on Gore Verbinski's 'The Lone Ranger.' The film's primary visual effects challenges involved the creation of the hundreds of photorealistic CG environments seen throughout the film's dramatic action sequences.

Honestly had no idea the scale of the effects in this movie. That proves the mastery you have over organic environments. Simply inspiring. Invisible visual effects - that's what you achieved.

This is the type of stuff that doesn't get nominated because it doesn't look like there are any EFX. Amazing work.

Erika Nilsson If I have understood what you are talking about, then yes. This is called rotoscoping and it is a very tedious frame by frame process to help ensure the realism of the shot and to help when compositing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotoscoping

Your vfx work just blows my mind!!! Seriously!!! I wish more people appreciated Visual Effects and the work that actually goes into it instead of saying, "That movie sucked." They could say I didn't like the story but the vfx were AWESOME!! Sadly it is not always that way with people. Love your work though!!

This type of VFX is more impressive to me than the stylized stuff. I appreciate the stylized, but photo real is 10x the work and skill, IMHO.

I actually forgot I watched this movie. It wasn't bad, but for some reason it was forgettable. Seeing the FX reel is very impressive though. However, I keep thinking that all those great effects don't register with my brain any more. It's such a huge amount of work, yet it doesn't help sell movies to me any more. There is something about the look of these greenscreen movies that works better with certain genres, most notable sci-fi and fantasy pictures.

The effects where not there to sell the movie, but to sell the story and the action, without being prohibitive in cost or effort. If you cannot tell that they did these effects than they succeeded.

I think in recent years filmmakers have brought it back to employing visual effects when needed but having a real plate to build upon (such as Chris Nolan). Great visual effects requires the artistry and the tools and like any tool needs to be in the right hands, films such as Iron Man and Transformers have benefited greatly from visual effects as well as Davey Jones from Pirates' 2 & 3, yes CG has it's limits and miniatures are still superior in a lot of areas but in the last 20 years there have been some great examples of vfx.
