I haven't cut that many stones .. maybe 50-60 stones. I also have been hanging on to just a few designs. That brilliant cut is easy to "memorize" ..and I kept on cutting that design until I got it in my "muscle memory" .. Then I moved on to the Portuguese cut which also is an easy cut to memorize. I have also cut some cushion designs, but never tried an oval design ...I don't think I'm skilled enough or have the right equipment for it ..I have a homemade machine with one of these cheap Chinese "mast devices" and even if I use a digital angle finder I dont think the machine is accurate enough. ..But I've been thinking ..would it be easier to start with the crown 🤔 .. because if I start with the pavilion I don't think I will be able to end up with a table that meets up with all the meetpoints. But of course..I don't want to end up with a stone like one of those massprodused stones that has an okay crown but with a messed up pavilion with just some random inaccurate facets that looks like it's cut by a blind person 😅 Anyway .. thank you for this education video, I think I was following what you meant and I'm sure it will make more sense when I just start to cut an oval stone.

I cut crown first and I prefer it that way. The table helps center and balance the main. Also I still strive for good meet points on the bottom too. You can do an oval. Hand shape the outline, cut in your mains and then experimentally place all your facets. Jambpeg cutters have an 8 sided stick plus indexes and they do fine. You can do. Try it and see.

Great information... But I still need to learn a lot... I can cut many designs with hand piece faceting machine but I can't the Cushion cut yet.... if you specify any book or course for that I wil be very thankful to you... Here in Pakistan there is no such an institute or learning place to learn advance techniques....😢

Check out our online school. www.facetingapprentice.com. We have classes specifically about the oval mix cut. If you’re trying to cut the cushion mix cut, this class will help a lot. It’s video based so you can do it from anywhere in the world.

@@JustinKPrim awesome. Can't wait. I've been itching to cut gems for, honestly over 10 years. I really want to get my hands dirty, but can't afford 5 g's. Again, thanks for all the great vids.

Or, if you want to cut faster, and _hands free_ you could buy a Merlin Gem Bot Automatic Faceting Machine for $4k. I’d love to see you review this thing. Could be a game changer.

Literally changing the game from being an artist to being a machine operator. This is not at all interesting to me. This is like going to a master painter and saying, wouldn’t you rather just use a LaserJet printer. For me, Gemstone Cutting is my art, my craft, my passion. Getting a robot to do it for me is the opposite of all that. I’d love to see one in action, but I don’t care about it at all.
