Hey, I'm seriously considering buying these monitors, but I read the reviews online and I'm worried about their longevity... There are not so little comments about how something just stops working e.g. woofer/back panel/volume wheel etc. after anywhere from 4 to 10 months. And I see you wrote this comment a year ago, so I wanna ask if you're still using them and have they worked properly since you got them? Thanks in advance.

I've been mixing on these for about two weeks. I wish I had them 10 records ago. The concept of mixing on small monitors is 100% spot on and these little dudes sound great. My mixes are translating really well, and though you dont get tons of bass response, my low end mix is better than ever and accomplished in the smallest amount of time ever. Fantastic. I took my mixes to a pro studio with bad ass huge monitors and they sounded right on those too. Most home recordists have poorly treated or untreated problematic rooms to mix in - these help a lot.

I just wanna ask if you still have and use the iLouds? If so, how long do you have them in total? Are they still functioning properly and didn't get faulty (woofer/panel dying, bass port noise etc.)? I'd like to buy them, but I read online that many users complain about how short they last, that something stops working after a couple of months etc. and I don't want to splurge almost 300 dollars just to return them in like 3 months. Did you maybe experience any of the above? Thanks in advance!

@@ari.2406 you're welcome. You can't push them too hard. They have an internal clip protection circuit that will mute them. One feature that's useful is the led light on the front - it's white when they are on but turns color and eventuall clips red. They can help you "see" the mix pushing too hard. i know there are several other meters for that but there's somthing about the monitors doing it that I find helpful. you won't regret getting them. I found mine used on Ebay for 180.00

I made the mistake of using the built in mic stand mounts to position my monitors up and a bit farther away. There really is a difference in the bass response if the monitors are arms width apart or not. I'd recommend just keeping them on the desk.

@@ari.2406 did you ever buy them?
@ari.2406
@ari.2406 2 жыл бұрын
@Robert Martin I did, in June 2020. They still work flawlessly, though I have never bothered to test the Bluetooth function or reverse the audio cord (since I have an audio interface). I have to note that I take proper care of them (wipe dust regularly, knob on their back is always actually below 0, I only accidentally had a peak once but it seems it didn't affect them). As for the performance, I can definitely confirm that for the amount of money they're sold they may among the best (if not the best) performers in their price range (especially if your desk is small/lacking space in which case they are unbeatable). I've been using them for music production and casual use (music listening and general audio output) and sound-wise, they punch way above their weight. Sure, they're not completely neutral (the sound reproduction is fairly balanced and neutral honestly) but hey, is there a system that is? Even the much more expensive ones often fail at that. Low end gets cut off at like 55 Hz and it's pretty audible, but how IK managed to pump out 55Hz out of these juniors is beyond everyone. Besides, if I have to work on low end I usually do it through headphones. I'll add that I've used them with two different interfaces (dirt cheap Behringer UMC22 for over a year and SSL 2+ for a couple of months now). At first I couldn't say if there was discernible quality of audio reproduction, but once I played FLACs and produced using my go-to samples and VSTs I could defnitiely hear even more sound info and depth. Ok I've gone off the rails a bit 😂 All in all, if you can get them and are limited by available room in your workspace then by all means buy them. Or even if you aren't, still get them, it can't be a bad choice. Though it's important to say that iLouds are strictly near-field monitors for small rooms (up to a meter of working distance would be the max functional amount at sweet spot) and that's applied if you're doing technical sound work. If, on the other hand, you have enough space on your desk then there are alternatives in that price range (Adam T5V, Presonus Eris E5 etc.). Whatever your scenario might be, Micros are a great buy. All the best ✌🏻

How do you recommend connecting them to an audio interface with 1/4" balanced outputs for monitors (e.g. Scarlett 2i2)? Are there any cons to using unbalanced mono TS cables out of the audio interface's balanced outputs to iLoud MM RCA inputs? Thanks!

@1:53 I guess you might have really meant "arm's-length width apart" (not shoulder-width.) Not only arm's length is more or less what you illustrate with your hand separation later, but also it would form an equilateral triangle with each speaker also at arm's length from the center of our head. So speakers on either side of a screen at more or less an arm's length from each other, and also each of them at an arm's length from our head.

I'm listening in to a pair and they do have a hiss. The first 30 seconds or so when turning on while they scan bluetooth there is some extra hissing noise too. But when this ends, a slight amp humm with a hiss is certainly audible on this pair; sitting about 60 cm from them, with or without sources connected, different power sockets, flat eq settings. I turn their hardware volume down on them as possible which makes it kinda bearable, YRMV. Once audio is reproduced I don't notice it. Also be aware they sure do lets say 'feature' some pretty nasty port turbulence around the 50hz mark with very audible wind noise and chuffing at medium or higher levels and sustained notes (For anyone with a pair want to experience this, play 'These foolish Things' Jimmy Smith on Softly as a Summer Breeze record open.spotify.com/track/5yih6kBPAUIyKuN3M9doR2?si=9PIEgFxlTkGqz5J2ZWngeA ). Important to know if you're going to use this for certain genres with a lot of tones in that region. They sure are great sounding and impressive monitors, but they do have their quirks.

They are good untill they are not, which with Ik multimedia hardware is the norm, i went through 3 Iloud's and now my Micromonitors are failing due to I think the cheap link cable which has broken on my micromonitors and also two of my friends have had the same issue.. I've had zero luck with Tech support who originally told me they would send me a link cable to see if that was the issue, they asked for my address for posting, which i gave, and a few days later received a reply with a link to purchase the cable from their site.. I will never buy Ik Multimedia hardware again, cheap components and dire customer service.. Plenty other options out there with a better history of making solid hardware..

They are two very different animals. I'm assuming you're talking about the Avantone mix cubes. So it depends on what you are after. If you are looking for detail, especially in the high end , then the ilouds. However if you're looking to really explore your midrange then the Avantones. I think the ilouds will give you a better representation of what folks are hearing on a range of bluetooth speakers.

I've owned them for a year as well, and _when they work_ they sound ok. I find that mine will simply cut out (they don't power down) when a loud note or something with hard attack (like percussive organ sound) then in about 30-60 seconds they come back on. It's infuriating. They're not being played too loud nor are they being overdriven. I'm not happy.

@@c3ajeff That should be fine. What interface are you using? You might want to check the output levels from that. Obviously the overload circuit is activating for a reason. Let's hope it's something you can fix by chasing the output gain staging. I use focusrite interfaces and the applications that come with them do have output controls that sometimes need to adjusted. Also if you're using some sort of monitor switching station, you should make sure that it is running the outputs at the proper levels +/-4db. I have the presonus Monitor station and I have to program each set of outputs for the monitors I use.
@c3ajeff

@@GaragebandandBeyond I'm using a M-Audio M-Track 8X4M for my interface - it has a master gain knob and yes this happens when it's turned up a little but not a _LOT_ . (I also have a pair of TC Electronics FX150's in parallel with the IK's, no monitor switching - yet) I understand gain staging principles and follow them _carefully_ . What it seems like to me is the overload is switching on prematurely or perhaps I am just expecting too much from the little monitors. Honestly I think it's reasonable to expect some satisfying volume levels from 3'-4' away... but anything above a very low-moderate volume level and they kick out. My other 'monitors' have no problem. Ironically, I _just_ looked it up and I bought them 11/30/2019...
@GaragebandandBeyond
@GaragebandandBeyond 4 жыл бұрын
@@c3ajeff Damn.... I was hoping the problem was there instead of inside the iLouds. They should be able to get to a decent volume before doing that. My guess is that the sensor is going bad. If the loudness is the same, the room will do the same. What size of woofers you have isn't important at the same frequencies. Don't want to hear the room, get the ilouds, is a ludacris statement. Strange product, don't like the idea, and the price is quite high for such tiny speakers. If you want to have less impact from the room, get headphones.
@GaragebandandBeyond
@GaragebandandBeyond 5 жыл бұрын
Zts666 you are 100% wrong. I’ve been studying room acoustics for over 20 years I know what I’m talking about. The smaller the speaker the less the SPL’s, meaning less air is moved, meaning the room is returning a lot fewer reflections. It has little to do with volume and more to do with SPL. Read the review in recording magazine from December. They did a great job of explaining it.
@Zts666
@Zts666 5 жыл бұрын
@@GaragebandandBeyond If the spl is the same (same volume) it makes no difference. The idea of smaller speakers to just be better in the room is strange. If you have an 8 incher, and the same spl/volume levels, there is no difference other then the added hearable frequenties. 55hz is way to high. Now i have to admit that i am working with very expensive monitors in a treated room, but still.
@GaragebandandBeyond
@GaragebandandBeyond 5 жыл бұрын
@@Zts666 The human ear hears pressure, not volume. The difference between sound pressure and volume is that the closer that to the source of the sound, the more pressure you will hear. The farther away you get from the source of the sound, the pressure will be less, but the volume will be the same. A good analogy would be a faucet. At the top of the faucet where the water comes out, there is more pressure than at the bottom, but the volume of water is the same. You can trust me on this.
@Zts666
@Zts666 5 жыл бұрын
@@GaragebandandBeyond I get that, but if the spl levels are the same there is no difference between a big or small speaker. Except for the detail. The room will react the same, that's all i meant. And ofc i think that this size of monitor will never be suitable or good enough for propper music production. But that's another point.
@GaragebandandBeyond
@GaragebandandBeyond 5 жыл бұрын
@@Zts666 You should REALLY read the article in Recording Magazine about these. I have using these to produce every single one of my Monday Music songs, so I can promise you that they are great for mixing proper music production. I'm not the only professional engineer who thinks so. And again, you're incorrect. The smaller speaker moves A LOT LESS air meaning that they interact with the room a lot less than 8 inch monitors. These are Super Near Field Monitors. Unless you have studying room acoustics for over 20 years, I would say try and trust me on this point. You can argue with me all you like, but until you have actually tried these monitors, you really won't understand what they can do.
