For my science class in 9th grade (but still in middle school because my school district is weird), I had to use this online experiment simulator called "Star In A Box". Which strangely had a Welsh language option. It's not like it had any other vulnerable languages that it had options for, all the other langauges it had options for were languages you'd think would be on a list of languages! And yet they just had Welsh as one of the options! Kudos to them. . . I guess.

The reason the daffodil is the national flower is because its Welsh name 'cenhinen Bedr' (meaning St Peter's leek) matches. It was popularized in the 19th century when daffodils were seen as more attractive emblems to depict and to wear than leeks from the garden! The guy reading the Prodigal son story is brilliant. so well read and meaningful.

Maybe there is a common Italo-Celtic lineage but also you need to consider the fact that Britain (present day England) was a province of Roman Empire and Latin was spoken alongside celtic Britonic, the ancestor of Welsh language.

1:50 that bottom sign in the middle actually has a funny story. The people making the road signs sent the text to the translators so they can put it into welsh and the translators were not in the office. That meant that an automated message was send out, in welsh, and it was put on the sign as the guys making the sign didn’t know what it meant.

The Romans governed Britain for a few centuries, so a few words of both Latin and Greek survive. 'Agorwch y ffenestr.' 'Open the window.' 'Agor' to open comes from the Greek 'Agora' and ffenestr is, of course,. fenestra, the Latin for window.

Too bad Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Breton, Cornish, and Manx do not have the same luck as Welsh... From the ones I have listed, only Irish is officially recognised, but not used outside of school in any way. And Breton is even threatened by the French policy regarding the use of the national language.
@pilipala40032 жыл бұрын
It's not luck and it never has been, it's been extremely hard work to get to this stage and still we have to keep pushing. I've seen comments in this thread as to what is the point in speaking Welsh and you get that attitude with every language wherever you go. I am extremely proud to send my daughter to a Welsh speaking school and learn along side her. We've come so far since when I was a kid in school in the 90s when there was no Welsh school in my area but it's still a long road ahead.

What an odd question to ask about any of the planet's indigenous languages
@samhaine68042 жыл бұрын
as another commented said, an odd question to ask about any language; but ill try to answer. 1. welsh isnt 'useful' the same way english or mandarin is useful as an international language of business. a person might learn english in order to be able to speak with a lot of people from many different countries; but a person would learn welsh in order to speak to a more specific group of people, and to connect specifically to welsh culture. yes, everyone in wales also speaks english, but welsh isnt just spoken in the house. if you want to really connect with people you need to speak their language, or atleast try 2. academic reasons, welsh has a very long literary and poetic tradition, and you need to be atleast familiar with the language to study things like ancient british history or the king arthur myth. the language itself, infact, can tell us a lot about history. 3. being able to pronounce all the complicated place names ;-)

Only in writing, but Italian "chi" (who) is pronounced the same way (/kee/) as Welsh "ci" (dog). "A chi?", as it happens, means not only "And you?" (formal or plural, i.e. "E Lei?" or "E voi?"), but also "And a dog?" ("E un cane?", the aspirate mutation after "a": c->ch) .
