A Retrospective Of The Forgotten WORST BEST Mario Game- Super Mario 3D Land

The Super Mario series is the greatest franchise in gaming. With games like New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party, and even Mario Strikers, there is something for everyone. My favorite Mario games are the 3D platformers. Super Mario Odyssey being my favorite in the series. Everyone remembers Super Mario 64, Sunshine, the Galaxy games, and even 3D World. Super Mario 3D Land however, is often overlooked. Perhaps because it's on the Nintendo 3DS. In this retrospective, we'll be taking a look at the first handheld 3D Mario!

3D Land was my very first 3DS game and I love it with all my heart. I love the inclusion of the Mario Drawing Song. It's like a love letter to Flipnote Studio and brings back those fond memories. The fact that it has any kind of negative reputation astounds me.

This game holds the most special place deep in my heart. This was my first ever video game that i got with my 3ds. I was 7 when i played through it and to this day i still pick it up every few months. Its undoubtedly fun however old you are and brings out my inner child whenever i boot it up. Hot take: I enjoyed this game more then 64. I finished 64 a few months ago and it’s honestly pretty overrated. Sure 3D land may be generic, but the game is very playable and fun. And if you think the game is so “easy” try to beat the game without the tanooki suit. This game holds such a special place in my heart, it was one of my first Mario games. 3D land deserves more attention, it’s such an underrated game!

As far as Mario 3D Land is concerned, I wouldn't necessarily call it a "bad" game by any means. Sure, it's no Mario Odyssey and we've come a long way since Mario 64, but I feel like Mario 3D Land is a game that makes sense. In other Mario 3D games, stars are usually collectables even though its established as a power up other Mario games, but I digress. I feel like there was definitely lost potential, they could have had Tanooki Mario work like Wing Cap Mario but with a meter instead of a time limit, and other power ups from other Mario games could've returned.

Definitely had fun beating it 100% twice. Honestly the only thing I didn't really like is having to beat every level as both Mario and Luigi but, beating Special 8-👑 definitely felt like an accomplishment after everything was said and done.

I see 3D Land as a prototype for what was seen in 3D World: Taking the concept of 2-D platforming and giving it a 3-D spin. As such, 3-D Land is more of a “proof of concept” type of game that falls in the same area of games you mentioned before, being Wii Sports and Nintendo Land: Early system launch titles meant to sell others in the concept of the system.

Honestly it's perfectly OK for 3D Land to play it safe. It's a whole new gameplay style for Mario, so it's testing the waters to see if it'll work. Since it did, we got the extremely creative 3D World. Basically 3D Land crawled so that 3D World could run.

Super Mario 3D Land is a fun and easy game. I just wish so many levels weren't reused. My favorite levels are the final Bowser castle with that amazing run on the bridge at the end, the crown level, the open desert level, and the vertical tree levels.

What puts me off is the soulless theming: it could have been a return to Sarasaland (Super Mario Land 1) or Mario's Island (I don't know the actual name, but I mean SML2: 6 Golden Coins' world), instead we get an aseptic collection of yet again Super Mario Bros levels put at random. A Mario 64 like level, then a water level, then a desert level, with no connection to the overworld map. It feels disconnected and impersonal to me. Surely, it could have been. But it hasn't.

I still really love 3D Land, and think its a great Mario game. But I can't help but get the same feeling from it now that I get from the NSMB games. A solid game, with just that extra touch of creativity missing from it. 3D World as a game pretty much does 3D Land better in every way to me. Because it has soooo much more character and personality in its theming. Even if it also has its generic areas.

I replayed the game recently and enjoyed it a lot more then I thought I would. I’m more into games where it’s fun to 100% like Kirby and the forgotten land, Mario 64 ect. And getting the Star coins were quite fun. The level design was great and quite unique. I don’t think it’s as good as the other 3d Mario games but it’s still a great time.

Tbh I prefer 3D Land’s level designs over the ones in 3D World. The only things I like better in 3D World are the improved depth perception and Mario’s faster movement speed along with the more expansive non-linear interconnected overworld. But other than that, I actually kind of like 3D Land more than 3D World. I also prefer the final boss fight in 3D Land over the one in 3D World.

I remember being super disapointed that we weren't getting a Galaxy game on the Wii U, now almost 9 years later 3D world is regarded as one of the best Mario games plus a remake/extra content on the Switch.

Still play this game sometimes, really strong Mario outing. Only things that kind of lower it down for me is the very large number of reused level layouts (at least that’s mostly in the special worlds, but still), short levels (mostly forgiven since it is a pure handheld) and the fact that you have to beat every level twice to unlock the special final level (why?). But still a really good game overall.

I think the 3DS Mario games are actually the MOST important Mario games because all of them incorporated elements that became mainstays in their respective Mario series (E.g. Mario 3d land with its style that resulted in 3d world, Mario kart 7 with its underwater karts and gliding that became mainstays in the Mario kart series, and even nsmb2 with gold Mario, a character that we Nintendo probably forgot about until 2017, and wanted to give a reason for that game to be relevant)

I think to compare the "3D something" series, to the actual 3D games isn't an fair comparison considering how different the 2D and 3D games are. It's more like a step up to the 2D series but it uses some 3D mechanics. 3D land was the first one of this new "3D something" series and even if it didn't bring a lot of new things to the table, it got to mix the two styles of games that Mario has in one little game, just for that i think it was innovative enough for a new Mario game, and it was the perfect choice to make a 3D Mario game in a handheld, since the system isn't powerful enough io make a galaxy level game, just make it with a 2D design in mind, with quick, short and well designed levels. To me 3D Land is my top 5 best Mario game out there, sure that 3D world is a much better upgrade to the formula and is one step up, but i still like the simplicity 3D land has.

Honestly don't get why so many people think this game is bland. First off, it has some of the coolest new enemies in recent Mario history. So idk why people think they played it safe there. Level theming, while being pretty simple, is very unique. You have cool set-pieces and fun backgrounds. Yeah they could've went further, like they did in 3D World, but it works for what the game is. They also have a bunch of new stuff. Abstract levels likely based on the abstract levels of Galaxy & Galaxy 2, Clock Levels, Temple levels, and military fortress levels to name a few. There are even unique underground themes aside from the typical sewer version. There's a lot of variety. World Map backgrounds are all fun and different from anything else in the modern era, and overall it's just a very unique game. This wasn't mentioned in the video, but a lot of people online like to say that 3D Land is bland and suffers from "NSMB-ification", when the game barely takes anything from NSMB at all, and is visually distinct on its own.

Personally, I think the game is great. Sure, it's easy, and there are repeated levels (though the first Super Mario Bros. had this), but I still see the charm of the original games. In it, we also get enemies (Prongo for example) that we never see again, like New Super Mario Bros. DS. (this game had a lot of unique enemies, making the game feel like it has variety) It introduced the Boomerang Flower, which is a neat item to use. My only complaint is...the Special Worlds only have like 8 or so new levels. The others are just harder versions of normal levels. They are only harder because of the changed design as well as the tight time limit (3D World would repeat this process). The physics are a bit wonky, but the Tanooki Leaf fixes that. How the game looks is...well, Super Mario 64 DS meets Super Mario Bros. 3. There is a LOT of Mario Bros. 3 elements in this game. (The bolted bricks, the Tanooki Leaf, even the sky music, albeit ripped from Mario Galaxy, is in the game). All in all, I'd say Mario 3D Land is fun if you just want to play a casual Mario game on your 3DS.

(A bit of a long comment. Apologies in advance) I do enjoy this game a good bit too actually, but I do agree it could have been a bit better overall. So, I can't remember where I read this unfortunately, but I read that the original plan for the bosses were to use the Koopalings and Bowser instead. But the 3DS launched with data storage issues, which contributed to the price cut and the super early hardware revision of the New 3DS coming around (and is the reason why a lot of early 3DS games were stunted in one way or another). As I'm sure you've noticed, there has been quite a bit pulled from SMB3 for 3D Land (Tanooki Leaf, Jump/Music Note Blocks, Airships, even the Black & White checkered flooring, etc. They definitely did it a lot better here than in NSMB2 tho) and they were going to use the bosses there too. However, since the 3DS launched with those data storage issues I mentioned, the 3DS apparently couldn't handle the Koopalings' models and therefore were cut from the game, leaving Bowser alone. Yoshi was intended to be in this game somehow as well, but was also cut for similar reasons. But since they still wanted to stick with the SMB3 theming, they decided to bring Boom-Boom back in place of the Koopalings that couldn't make it (I mean, he basically is one and even has the unofficial title of "Forgotten Koopaling"), and they created Pom-Pom (who, just like Boom-Boom, is pretty much a Koopaling too) just so that Bowser and Boom-Boom weren't the only bosses in the game. Somewhere along the line, they decided to change the multiple Bowser fights into fake Bowsers as well as include Dry Bowser in the post game. While I am one of the few that honestly actually does like Boom-Boom (he's funny and kind of adorable imo) and was happy to see him back after an over 2-decade disappearance (and after they didn't bring him back with the other Koopalings in NSMBWii), I was a bit disappointed they didn't do more with him. While I'm not as bothered by it as you are (since I think their philosophy with Mario games is that bosses are always a second thought to level design, especially in 2-D Mario), I do agree that their boss fights being generic is a problem. Because the devs definitely have the power to make all of their reoccurring bosses way more interesting than they currently are (we've seen examples of this all over)...they just choose not to, and it honestly sucks =/ ... Sure Boom-Boom's boss fights were a little more interesting/creative in 3D World, but it really wasn't by much... At least Boom-Boom is looking to actually get some nice things for him in Mario Strikers Battle League. He's way more expressive and lively than ever before and it's nice to finally see happen for him. Great that Next Level Games can take a character that has next to nothing to them and give them a great deal more than the main devs bother to do. I did have a similar idea that the game should have taken more from Super Mario Land. Heck, if the 3DS didn't have those data issues, maybe they could have made the whole post game be Super Mario Land but redone in the new 2D-3D gameplay style. That definitely would have been a new experience too. But yeah, nice video here and thank you for reading if you did.

Oh yeah, I remember hearing that the Koopalings were originally planned for 3D Land. It's kind of a shame they couldn't make it, they're really fun characters (Ludwig and Iggy are my faves) and it would've been nice to see them in a 3D game. @@nolang.7443 I'm really glad we got Boom-Boom back (even if his re-debut was a bit underwhelming) and that Pom-Pom is around now...but yeah, would have been nice to have the Koopalings to spice this game up a bit more. Maybe they could have even thrown in more world themes to include Boom & Pom in there too. A Mario game with 10 base game worlds (one for each Koopaling + Boom, Pom & Bowser as the final) isn't common at all heh.

Yeah this game is nostagic to me cause it was pretty much the first 3ds game i ever played but when i replayed it a few months ago i mean it was solid but its just average like i like it but also easily forget about it still definitely good no doubt though

Tbf, 3D Land would've been pretty unique game were it not for 3D World copy-and-pasting its formula. It does annoy me a bit that people give 3D World praise for being creative because in a way its just as derivative, if not more.

I honestly don’t have much of a problem with them playing it safe since they wanted to keep the game simple. I believe this game is disliked for what it isn’t instead of what it is like 3D world

Fun fact: I NEVER played Super Mario 3D Land... But I played 3D World so all the stuff that was introduced in 3D Land.. was instead introduced to me in the Wii U game. XD And I'm glad that was my first experience with this style. Also, Boom Boom < Pom Pom but ya know what? Bring back REZNOR as a mini boss! At least it's ANOTHER mini boss that isn't just Boom Boom again. Also, I remember the salt because we hadn't had a traditional 3D collectathon Mario game in years and that wouldn't happen until Super Mario Odyssey.
