This was one of the most profoundly cathartic testimonies towards mercy I think I have ever heard. I needed to hear this. This woman is a fucking sage. Thank you, Sarah, for having Mary on your show.

Your music isn't depressing at all; Mercy Now is perfect and beautiful, and reflects that we all need to be merciful to others and, especially, to ourselves as we walk through the world. I love your work, your energy, and give thanks x

I adore you, Mary Gauthier, You are an amazing poet/songwriter. Responding to a comment in the Sarah Silverman interview: your songs absolutely do not make me feel suicidal - in fact, quite the opposite. The compassionate perspective you articulate in your songs is a healing balm for me. Please Mary come to Tucson, AZ - I could use a little mercy now.

The honesty in Mary's voice, along with the poetic phrasing of her heartfelt lyrics sung to a sad but beautiful melody can sometimes be enough to make me cry. John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams and Vern Gosdin they all have that same effect on me. Nobody sings a sad song like those musical artists. They're the best at capturing the emotion of a song and delivering it to the listener. Nobody touches my heart the way they do. I have them together on one of my playlists. Sometimes late at night if I'm feeling blue, I like to get high and put that Playlist on shuffle and let Mary, John, Emmylou, Vern and Lucinda have their way with my emotions and let myself cry and it always feels so good. It brings such sweet relief to my heart and soul. Then I'll fall asleep and sleep like a baby and wake up the next morning feeling much better with a clearer mind and a lighter load.

Mary Gauthier gave us a show to go down as a favorite. Saw her with Tim O'Brien and their Troubadours group the other night, abd ordered Mercy Now record as soon as we got home. Glad I found her.

Mary Gauthier is a singular talent. She has a rare gift for understanding that what is simple is what is true. I've been a fan from the moment I heard her sing "Snakebit" around a decade ago. Nice to see that Sarah is smart and brave enough to give someone so un-mainstream a forum. Thanks, Sarah.

I dont feel depressed when I hear this song it's a beautiful song about human feelings and compassion . If you have ever heard Johnny cash or waylon Jennings this is a song that they would have written it's just plain old good country music beautiful song and a talented artist

Mary - your songs always take me to another place - one I am not familiar with - you make me think long and hard about life, death, and how lucky and blessed I am ... for this I thank you - there are not too many out there who follow their souls. Sarah - thank you so much for bringing this amazing woman to a wider audience - and for your fabulous new show ...

Her music has helped me through some dark dark times. I love singing them too. My favorite to sing is "Sideshow". I think she was in a good mood when she wrote that song. It's a fun one! Her songs aren't depressing, I use them to work through my depressive episodes. They're cathartic. The album "Rifles and Rosary Beads" that she talks about here is wonderful, a masterpiece. I wish every veteran and their families would hear it. She's singing their pain so that we can understand a little bit better. The songs talk about the war within the families when these soldiers come home. "...Who's gonna care for the ones who care? For the ones who went to war? There's landmines in the living room And egg shells on the floor I lost myself in the shadow of your honor and your pain You stare out of the window as our dreams go down the drain Invisible The war after the war... She's a beautiful voice for veterans, and all us "orphans" and "foundlings" out here who love how she gets us. She's been there.

I first got acquainted with Mary Gauthier by listening to an interview on PBS about the same time as this one. She sang Mercy Now and Drag Queens and Limousines. I remember her talking about working with the veterans as well. I love Mary's music and presentation. It is so soulful. The notes she plays have a way of hitting certain emotions when plucked in the order that she does. A few years later, I met Tret Fure and attended a few of her performances. When I had a chance to talk to her, I asked if she was familiar with Mary, she said yes. Their style is somewhat similar and they are both great song writers who share their talent by teaching others.

Point A: Here in Trumps America, Yeah, we cold use some mercy NOW!! Point B: in parallel with her comment about "getting what you deserve", someone I know was at a recovery related convention; the speaker had been a gang hit man for twenty years before getting into recovery. On an elevator, someone commented, "We all get what we deserve." His comment was, "My brother, if I ever get what I deserve, you just hope like hell you ain't in the same elevator with me at that time!"

I am looking forward to seeing Mary at Bell's this fall so much. Mercy Now has helped me value patience in dealing with family issues. "The quality of mercy is not strained..." Memorized this in elementary school, but Mary's song resonated so clearly. Teenage mom, POW veteran dad, suicide, scattered and distant birth family. I am lucky to have a wonderful family around me now. Mary's songs help me acknowledge the past and appreciate the present.

I listen to a lot of music on KZbin including Mary Gauthier--a genius. This is the first time I have seen mindless, stupid comments. Even loving the US and working with veterans does not cut it if you are lesbian, apparently.

I can only imagine how much mercy SS will be seeking out. I remember her comment about Jsus and how if he were alive she would "kill him again" That is how far she felt entitled to go for "comedy" It would require the mercy of God to forgive that foul act for which I have never heard her publically repent... the least she could do after saying something so horrible just to make a name for herself. Mary deserves better.

Great interview, but please stop with the "funny" comments Sarah. Yes, she knows it's a guitar. Otherwise a nice discussion with Mary. Lovely lady who's been through a lot. Looking at the comments made before me, she's certainly not one for everyone. Thank god. If she was, she'd be a mindless performer driven by record labels, and whatever sound is popular now. Thanks for doing what you do Mary. (and please do another record with Joe Henry!)

Some people have a different rock bottom than others, I think if we keep going on this current Political bender we will all need some Mercy, like right now. If we all got what we deserved I'd say 90% of us wouldn't be here. THINK For Yourself, don't believe anything you hear, some of what you read. Social Media is a sickness. Pick up your guitar and play. Go too youtube to learn something mindful. Be kind to your neighbors, love your kids. Do the right thing........ VOTE

United Nations Resolution: Rename the continents with non-native names to native names. Rename North America, South America and Australia to native names. "American, Latino and Hispanic" are Eurocentric colonialistic labels. Imagine: British officially named Native French, French named Native British, Chinese named Native Japanese, Palestinians named Native Israelis, Spanish named Native Africans, Koreans named Native Chinese, etc.
