Anemia can be classified based on mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and reticulocyte count.
Based on MCV
Microcytic Anemia: MCV less than 80 fL femtoliters. Examples include iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia.
Normocytic Anemia: MCV = 80-100 fL. Examples include anemia of chronic disease and acute blood loss.
Macrocytic Anemia: MCV more than 100 fL. Examples include vitamin B12 deficiency and folate deficiency anemia.
Based on Reticulocyte Count:
Hypoproliferative Anemia: Low reticulocyte count. This indicates inadequate bone marrow response to anemia. Causes include aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and iron deficiency anemia.
Normal reticulocyte count. Bone marrow is appropriately responding to anemia.
Hyperproliferative Anemia: High reticulocyte count. This indicates an increased production of RBCs by the bone marrow in response to anemia. Causes include acute blood loss, hemolytic anemias, and recovery from aplastic anemia.
