Im based in the northwest and rain had been a pain here but i have been able to get a cut on all 60 or so clients lawns. My only saving grace has been a 21inch lightweight honda and taking it easy on the turns. No complaints from any clients. They might not get stripes but its a lot better than being overgrown. An estate we look after that usually i get my ferris zero turn on has been push mowed and its not actually taken as long as i expected so they arent just small lawns. Pretty successful March with the conditions being how they are but definitley ready for some dry days. Well done getting rid of the cheap client. Took me 7 years to get customers im happy with that appreciate what we do, its at a point where each year we accept 2-3 extra jobs to fill in any house moves or deaths sadly and then we are back at full. Wish you all the best bud. Despite doing it all week i still find myself enjoying watching you do the same as me 😂

I think we all fall into the trap of wanting big gardens on our books as it looks impressive, but tbh they usually are the most hassle and the owners as nice as they are have more important things to deal with than the hard work the gardeners put in so that they can go on holidays or visit their second homes. Guaranteed they will query the invoice because you have spent hours in their garden to keep on top of everything and this could be a big chunk of your monthly income in their hands. Not worth it Pete. You do a good job so use your skills and hard work on someone who appreciates it and knows your worth. I would recommend you suggest to all of your clients that they need to mulch their beds with organic matter as that will improve those clay soils you have to deal with. Good job for the winter months 👍 Keep up the good work and don’t feel in anyway stupid about that job, just lose it and move on. Good to see premium bond lifting your spirits

What’s the going rate in Scotland mate I know most parts of the uk it will depend on region age and experience down south east England we aim for £25-£40 an hour and then there’s a waste charge on top of we have to take waste away Most places have garden waste bins or compost areas

@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 i live in aberdeenshire. Inverurie way. I hear people charge 20-25. i did one ladies grass here in Blackburn. she ha no side entrance to garden. lawn was on a slope with some railway sleeper steps. garden was around 40x40 foot. she said she got quoted 200 to get the grass cut. I found that ridiculous. When you consider a joiner with tools just as expensive or more expensive with alot of skills, charging say, 4 hours at 25 an hour, (if he did shall we say). then for me''cutting grass'' in regards to skills, for me its not fair to charge that rate. if the gardnener has lots of soil knowledge, plant knowledge, flower types, soil types, etc plus handy man skills then what should he be charging? i find it a minefield to figure out what to charge. people tell me (not the customers - of course lol) that i charge 15per hour is not enough. i just cant bring myself to charge 25 for cutting grass. however i do the gardening job at weekends and afterwork when the sumer light hits us. im a labourer by day doing ALL sorts of stuff, and for that i charge 15 per hour too.

You know I had a guy last year been going for nearly 8 years on my own even though we usually work in pairs, 3?hours £55!😂 I know , why I had him on that I don’t know, it wasn’t like we had an hourly rate it just got into a habbit and I knew this year it had to be £25 ph so last may I said is £60 okay and he made a couple of comments at 2 basically 20ph, I work in the Lake District, this guy had a huge house and grounds (he used to have two people doing all his hedges, I did them on my own, needless to say when we upped all our prices across the board this winter to 25ph baseline and up, I sent him a letter thanking for the work and thus making my excuses, I know he won’t find a better gardener than me (I’m not saying there aren’t, but trying to find them isn’t easy) I’d say I’m in par with you as a person and quality of work ❤️) I think your standards are v high!!! But he lost me over £5 every week for 3 hours work, i begrudged going and toyed with keeping him and telling him the rate, in the end I dropped it as was easier and I felt there was an edge ever since going from 55 to 60 which was still £15 shy at least, his grounds and hedges were huge, I’m so glad I don’t go there anymore, and everyone we upped in some case up by say £20 for the same visit we’re all totally happy as I explained the costs etc I’m really happy with where we are as a business now that we shedded a few jobs, all our work is now in one village ❤️ zero travel time
