The problem with seeing how far you push your customer is that the customer notices and it hurts the long-term value of the brand. @@gas_pump the price of the singles you pull is roughly 1.5x to 2.5x what the booster box you pull them from cost. I think its largely due to a smaller player base. But any store looking to crack packs and flip boxes needs to pay attention to this game.

I think, as a company, you need to balance that search for how far you can push the consumer with the damage that push can cause to your brand. Market research could have the same effect, but that requires work and capital to do: surveys, analysts, ect. WotC/Hasbro found out what they wanted, but hurt their brand in the end.

On the magic30 question, is it a mistake to have learned that the price was over the line: Yes, because what they learned may not have been correct. I'm not gonna pay that much for magic cards and its hard to imagine anyone else doing so without having the deepest pockets on earth. But instead of thinking of customers as whales, for a moment let's consider them frogs. You don't throw frogs into boiling water, you put them in cool water and slowly raise the temperature. It may take longer, but who knows how far it could have been pushed, even beyond $999 for four packs of proxies. I think they may have let their frogs jump out of the water by rushing to reach the right temperature

I get the concept about finding the line in the sand. Pushing the consumer and seeing what will work and what won't. The business model is maximizing margins, building profit takes presidence, unfortunately. However, using the 30th anniversary, something everyone was hyped about and just hail mary it! The optics of pushing that horse shit proxy product with basically flying into the sun of reprinting the RL, was a terrible idea. A different product could have been made to find that line without doing so much consumer confidence damage and alienating majority of players, investors, and the beautiful 3% young ladies. The management needs a change with people focusing on the game and preserving consumer support and longevity of players and the value of card over time. refocus the optics and then build the margins slower pushing prices and products without devastating this amazing game.

Pushing the line to breaking is bad business because of damage it did to your brand and customer trust. Customer being stores and players. You also didn’t make profits like you could have. The FaB explosion is directly related to breaking the line and it’s never been good business to giving your competitors an opportunity like that.

Production quantities were the only thing to consider as testing and learning. For the rest: The ability to learn is important and essential to a business. But still, a mistake is a mistake and what happened recently were mistakes that are not to be evaluated as testing. Magic 30 was pure arrogance at the decision maker level. The whole OGL drama in D&D was pure arrogance at the decision maker level. Surely there are always Timmys that provide some sales and prevent existentially dangerous mistakes, but a booster for $250? You can save yourself the experiment for an upper limit. 50 is okay as a test run and 25 if you wanna sell the thing. But 250 is so high that as a data analyst I can only say that it proves the obvious. Because a booster that is 10 times more expensive than a collector was just arrogant in 2022. For 2032 or 2042 you can simmer the frog so far, no question, just release higher and higher priced exclusives w/o doing that to the normal booster, set and collector stuff. And if you do that, then the supposed testing of 2022 is worthless too. In the end, the money that could have been made with Magic 30 was simply not made and only because the price was 10 times too high. So it's a mistake, not a test, and the learning effect is the minimum to avoid slaughtering a career as a top manager.
