The song is for her son, following her divorce from his father 😢 The opening lyrics "There's no gold in this river" - is referring to a gold wedding ring. "Drowning in silence" - is either referring to her ex-husband not talking OR her son blocking her out and going quiet. The 1st "non choice" that she HAD to choose was stopping singing whilst her son was an infant (hence the 6 year absence) - the visuals were the sheets of sheet music blowing out and away. The 2nd "non choice" that she HAD to choose was the divorce - the visuals showed her sitting (whilst obviously singing) in a chair, the camera lingers on her hand - minus her wedding ring. From start to finish, the director, very succinctly, embroidered poignant visuals throughout the vid. Nothing in the vid was wasted or frivolous - everything was purposeful and intentional. Most important though, was that the vid could NEVER be "bigger" than the song (similarly, the music was stripped back). The song had to tell the story - the song HAD to impact the listeners emotions. So fantastically clever 👏👏👏👏👏 She can write and sing so incredibly beautifully. What a star 🌟 Love from the UK 🇬🇧

I haven’t missed you because I’ve been watching you over at your other channel 😄 she wrote this song for her son. She got pregnant young(ish) and married the man and ultimately just got through with her divorce. So she wants her son and maybe even the next lover (which is a black man, you mentioned that) just take the decisions that she had to make into consideration and take it “easy on me”

@@butterflymama0838 For you, that might not be young. But for Adele, it wasn't something she was planning. SHE personally felt she was too young. Her career just started to take off and all of a sudden she got pregnant. Don't think she was ready at that point in her life to be a mother. (Of course now she is beyond thankful that it happened, but back then she really struggled with it). I'm almost 25 and I still don't feel like I'm ready to be a mother. It really just differs from person to person.

I become a mother at 17 then had another by 20 and the third by 24. I can tell you 24 is still quite young. I'm now 33 and can say I wasn't mature at all at that age.

The house that she’s filming in and sold is the real house she bought across the street from the house she bought her ex-husband so that her son could have both parents together. But her ex was riding her coattails and taking advantage of her finances. She is explaining to her son that she changed everything about herself for both him and her husband in order to make the marriage work when it was not going to be able to work. She’s asking her son to take it easy on her because she was just a child At 16 making music producer first album at 19 her second album at 21 her third album at 25 and had to tour and bust her ass and never got to see the real world and grow.
