I say hang in there just a bit longer. From what I’m hearing dealers are setting on tons of inventory right now across most major brands. Many are thinking there will be some inventory selloff sometime in 2025 that will get to the 10-15% markdown territory. As a general rule, if you’re paying cash, buy a slightly used truck. If you’re financing, buy new one and leverage all the financing incentives then pay it off 3 months into it. At the end of the day, I like to take the purchase price and divide that by the anticipated number of miles I’ll get out of it. The price per mile of ownership is a good comparison tool. I too really enjoy the process.

The Honda salesman encouraged me to finance the vehicle to get more incentives. I agreed after making sure that I could pay it off anytime with no penalty. Even with those incentives, they didn't come down on price much at all. I agree with another comment.....the dealerships haven't adjusted to life after Covid. For that matter, manufacturers haven't adjusted down elevated prices for everything from Coke to cars. They won't lower prices until consumers refuse to pay. Hope you're doing well. If I look in my area which is north Texas. The 2024 F150 XL has a MSRP of 40k. They are discounted by 10 to even 12k taking the price to 28-30k. So for them to not negotiate on the 40k price is not good. And they wonder why the auto industry can’t move any trucks right now. Go to auto trader and put in what you are looking for and see what’s in your area. Again, there are dozens here for 10k off MSRP. But to answer your question the more features the more over inflated the prices become. Just as of the last month or so they started with the discounts on the trucks with less features. RAM is supposed to be offering 13,500 off of their MSRP. Good Luck! Oh and it is also rumored RAM is going to go to a 5 year 100k warranty. You can get a Sierra here for the same price as the ford here if you want another GMC. Ford was the king of the recalls for three years running but the title went to Ram this year just to have ford announce today another recall on 300,000 trucks. They waited until today so they wouldn’t win the recall wall of shame for a 4th year in a row.

I've always changed the oil at 3 to 5 thousand miles . and rear differential oil at 25 thousand. and thermostat and coolant every 5yrs no matter what. the truck was 52 thousand and I think that's fair. it is the extended cab version. as long as it goes over 100 thousand miles, trouble-free. money well spent!

No...the issue is still inflation. The issue is still money spending snd printing by the govt. Wages don't just magically increase in the private sector. They are negotiated by employers sbd employees. Employers ESPECIALLY don't increase their wages to match inflation when the inflation levels are out of control. The vast majority of employers quite literally cannot do that, or they would cease to exist....and so would those jobs they supply. The issue is absolutely inflation. The issue is govt. After that, the issue is consumers paying for wildly overpriced vehicles. The "greedy"companies are literally giving the public what they want.....regardless of how overpriced you or I think they price their inventory. They can't do that unless the public buys from them still...and/or the govt bails them out. Again, the problem is govt and consumers en masse. Not actually the greedy companies themselves. At least they aren't the main issue.

@@KG-kq9tk I believe you are only correct when it comes to small business. Large corporations have the money to pay their employees standard of living increases. But instead pay CEO way too much and use money for stock buybacks. It was not that long ago when it was illegal for companies to do stock buybacks. Also in the 80’s they made an entire movie about someone not getting a Christmas bonus. The idea that companies wouldn’t give raises or Christmas bonus was insane back then. New truck prices have somewhat come back down to reality. I took a picture of a window sticker in 2022 when they had a F250 gasser for $66,700. That price included a $3,500 "market adjustment". You can now buy that truck for around $53,000. The shortages from a few years ago are completely over. But used trucks still seem very overpriced to me. Buying used would be my preference but as an example theres a 2019 F250 for sale near me with 60,000 miles for $36,600. That's a 5+ year old truck with no warranty. I think spending 13K more to get a new one is a better deal and much easier to finance a new truck.

I owned a new Ridgeline, if you do anything that requires truck needs stay away, the Ford f-150 you want is the sleeper that all the gear heads are after, the dealers know that and don't negotiate much. If you service your vehicle don't worry about the turbo. Diesels get a million miles on turbo chargers not sure why people bring that up, just change the oil every 5K. I have a EcoBoost 3.5L and love it just change oil more often than the computer and you will be fine. A simple inflation calculator says the 2002 would be worth 48979.00 today. Great video, Given some of the tech that goes into the newer vehicles i can see why they are slightly more expensive.

I am 61 years old and had a nearly identical experience this past summer replacing my 17 year old RAM pickup truck. A crew cab was needed for my requirements. What I found was the 2024 market place has significantly changed in those 17 years and requires a lot of homework to be prepared to shop at dealerships today. First there are a lot of startup companies in today's market, which I quickly discarded from consideration due to my lack of knowledge and their non-existent track record to compare. Second, the change in technology offering is considerable that left me overwhelmed initially. I quickly learned that the terms "motor" and "engine" are no longer interchangeable. Third, I expanded my economic viability reasoning with cost of ownership to include time used and level of effort with maintenance. I concluded that convenience has value to me. This led me to Ford and GM model lines. A pick up truck is now offered in 2024 with either a "motor" or "engine" based propulsion systems. on the dealership lots. The actual differences to meet my requirements were near zero between the model line up at Ford and GM dealerships. The last term I relied on, and I did a lot of homework was "OTD" - out the door price. At both GM and Ford dealerships electrified propulsion trucks were negotiated at higher discounts and were easier to get OTD pricing on. The bottom line I found was both motor or engine based trucks are the same in terms of hauling, towing and carrying the grand kids around. It took a lot to get prepared to buy a truck in 2024 after 17 years but the results are more than satisfying with my choice after six months of ownership.

Price on what you bought in 2002 and the new Ford you're kicking tires on are two-wheel drive. That's a big difference compared to the 4x4 pickups people are paying big money for. Most of the trucks are four-wheel drive now. A standard cab 4x2 is harder to find because most of the trucks on the lot are the more expensive 4x4 double and crew cab models.

Of course, I'll be doing less and less of that in the future. I have tried to sell my tree-climbing gear, so I won't be tempted to take down another tree, but then a tree dies and I am shocked at what the professionals want to take it down. The last tree that had to come down, I specifically asked the company to give me a price that wouldn't make me do it myself. They didn't and I did the job myself.

I am in the trades so I need a truck for work. My truck currently is several years old and over 200,000 miles. It runs perfect but I know it’s time is coming… It’s extraordinarily depressing looking at new vehicle prices, and in fact, I wouldn’t ever buy a new vehicle, I’m just looking for benchmarks and references for the used truck market. I’m happy that people like you are shopping for new vehicles because that allows a secondary market. (somebody has to take one for the team!) I’m trying to stay away from vehicles manufactured during Covid because there’s been a lot of issues with vehicles across-the-board made during those years when people were just “phoning it in.” The other thing that concerns me is the engines are getting smaller and smaller and many of them are turbo charged. The technology is great, and they’re able to get the same horsepower and better gas mileage with smaller displacement, but I feel that the newer smaller engines are a lot more stressed than having a bigger displacement and letting it just chug along.

This meant that their profit was in the price of the vehicle, usually 100% or more and the price was non-negotiable. Now the price dropped about 20 thousand but they finance for about 5% bringing the final price of the truck back to the 0% cost. It's the greed of the manufacturers that's getting them.

I'm a Forester as well, I think that's what your channel name is implying! Anyway, I don't think it's the inflation that is the issue, the issue is what you encountered: manufacturers and dealers just don't stock/build the reasonably priced trims and those that do just won't negotiate on them like they used to. I've been a Forester for 20+ years, in that time I've had a company truck, then everyone went to personal vehicles with FAVR reimbursement. What this means: in my companies case, a truck less than 5 years old, a minimum price of $50,000 plus an absurd amount of liability insurance: 1 million plus coverage. So unlike the years I started when you were furnished a vehicle as a perk of the job, now the debt and liability are on you and every 5 years it's more financial burden. As this trend of higher prices on lots continue it's getting harder and harder to find that reasonable work truck trim that the math looks even remotely close to financially viable to keep going. Last truck I bought was a Ford Maverick, it was during COVID (no choice had to have a new one due to the year) and this was the cheapest I could find. I ordered one, it was not built in a year so I took whatever they had, almost everything I wanted, and at MSRP. Would I make that deal again, absolutely not, but it was the best I could do at the time. Keep your older vehicle, it sounds reliable enough, you have a backup, and you might be able to do basic repairs yourself. When I open a hood on these modern things, it's all covered by plastic shields and wires everywhere. I'd hate to try to change the plugs, and I guarantee there is no rotor or distributor or any way to adjust the timing that I could do myself.

I've bought 4 new Chevy 2500 or 3500 cargo vans over the years generally getting a new one when they start to rust in around 10 years. The 2007 2500 with 80K miles is an exception as I'm getting closer to retirement age, but have decided to keep working as semi retired and the truck is rusting badly. I had to put a transmission in it at 47K miles which should have been under warranty to 50K but past 5 years, so they wouldn't cover anything. I've been looking at low mileage vans and almost bought a 2021 GMC Savana which was a fleet vehicle with 15K miles and had an 8 cylinder engine as all my prior vans did. When checking videos from other owners I 1st found Chevy's and GMC vans with 6.6L engines were having major problems with a gas saving, cylinder shutdown process that leads to valve/lifter trouble. That was supposed to have been corrected but now several owners of these vans (and pickups with 6.6L) are burning oil @1 Qt per 100 gallons of fuel used! GM put it in the manual that this was NORMAL! Not to me! I'm considering Ford but don't know what problems their having! Toyota and Honda don't make work vans like this or they'd be a #1 consideration!

You indirectly bring up a point that I've been considering, but that hasn't been mentioned here. I'm a truck guy and I've driven a pickup since 1977. BUT, at 70, do I still need a pickup. I've been giving some thought to look into vans. If all I need to carry is firewood, construction materials, yard debris, and garbage, a van might be just as good as a pickup. I could even carry a piano more comfortably. Plus, I could personalize it for camping. What do you think?
@MILGEO
@MILGEO 11 күн бұрын
@@ima4ster Sounds like a pickup is more suited to those things you carry. I've been driving vans since before 77, but don't remember the year of my 1st used Ford mid-engine bought used. In 79 I bought my 1st new Chevy and customized it like my 1st van as a camper style. In later years I bought a house and started my own business (P&H) which really needs a van IMHO to work out of like many trades. Usually the drive trains are more similar than different between vans & pickups, so I hoped that your viewers might have helpful input! I'm only slightly younger than you.

Former multi decade Ford Parts Manager here. Keep your Sierra. Make it brand new again if you have to. You’re better off keeping your dependable, older truck. I can tell you with absolutely certainty. The new trucks are GARBAGE. There is a reason all the manufacturers are getting their asses handed to them in warranty expense. All that new whiz bang technology is expensive as hell to fix. I know!! Up until 3 months ago I saw it first hand! We had a game in my Parts Dept. “Insane Price of the Day”. Even seasoned Parts guys shocked at parts prices. Don’t do it. Refurbish your Sierra. You’ll be glad you did.

When I bought my F350 Lariat power stroke new in 2003 sticker price was 45k. I ended up paying 36k with discounts. They wont even give you 10k off on a 90k truck now. They offered me 8k trade in. No way I can trade or pay what they ask. I have 330k miles and still running great.

Wow, you got a great deal back in 2003. 15% is the best deal I've gotten....that was on a 1987 Ford Thunderbird. I remember that the salesman took off his shoe and showed me a hole in the sole and said, "I'm not going to even make enough money on this sale to buy a new pair of shoes!"

I buy 1 or 2 year old lease turn in vehicles , I shop on auto trader in a 300 mile radius find what I want and make a deal. I keep my trucks serviced and clean. no food or beverage inside. the trucks are still under warranty, and I can usually move up 3 years for around 10 K for a loaded 4x4 F 150. yes, they are expensive but look how much it would cost to replace your house today compared to what you paid for it

It really comes down to when did you go looking for a truck. The Truck prices hit their peak in 2022- to 2023 with inflated MSRPs and mark ups of 10-15% on top of that and the truck prices have been ever coming back down to normal prices for the majority of 2024.

Thought I would add a data point. From what I could find a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab had a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $20,028. At a rate of inflation of 2% that truck would cost $30,962 in 2024.

@@ima4ster Yes it sounds like you are in the ball park. The other ugly stat that no one wants to admit to is that worker pay hasn't kept up with the rate of inflation. So the truck you bought in 2002 valued at 2024 prices is affordable to way less people today. Add to that the recent price increases on insurance, cost of gas, et al. and even less folks can afford what people were buying in 2002. Call yourself lucky not to be in that ever growing crowd who can't afford a new car/truck..

Considering median gross household income is around $75k, truck prices are way too high. After taxes a median family would have $50k for the entire year to live on, a truck that cost more than a year’s family take home is crazy.

I own a 2023 Tacoma and its great, I've owned a Ridgeline and its good but if you ever plan to tow or go off road then you need a body on frame vehicle. I wouldnt pay over msrp for any vehicle today I paid about 4k under msrp for the Tacoma and for the Ridgeline. The new Tacoma's aren't reliable with the 4 cylinder. If your looking for a reliable truck for a long term look at the frontiers with the proven V-6, they are cheaper but just as rugged and reliable as the older Tacoma's.

I purchased my 2000 Silverado 8-7-2000. Sticker was 27,600 and I paid 24,500. Standard cab 4x4 short box with a 4.8L V8, Dark Metallic Blue, Bucket seats and Tow package. It has 270,000+ miles now and still going. The problem I have with all new trucks is that the gadgets in them will render them unfixable in less then 10 years. I don't need a computer screen in my truck. I need it to be dependable. I have seen new vehicles be taken down and not operate because the rear camera communication goes to ground from corrosion. Shop rate is too expensive to do the investigation as to an electrical issue. You can't replace your own parts because you need their software to program your truck to except the new parts. I buy only older trucks now and pay to restore them. I have my 2000 Silverado, a 1997 Silverado and a 1993 Sierra and I could not buy a new truck for the money I have into all three of them.

Less is more in the case of new trucks. Our newest vehicle, a 2015 Highlander has a few new features like the power rear lift door. The door sensor went out and Toyota wanted $2,000 to replace it. I took the power lift system off the door and replaced the struts with simple hydraulic struts that fit an older Highlander model......and now it works beautifully. I saved $1,800 by making the repair myself.

Older pickup trucks are better than the new pickups today. Several factors will determine how good or reliable the older trucks are. They are the following was the vechicle stored in a shelter or garage. Was the truck serviced regularly or slightly more often the recommended interval? Was the truck drove hard or handled rough? An older truck that has been well cared for is still a great reliable vechicle. I was surprised how high the new pick up trucks are. I recently took photos of several windows stickers from a local dealer and I was surprised at how high the window stickers were. I had also done this exact same thing about three years ago once again the prices were very high then also. I noticed the white single cab vechicles with plain wheels were around forty thousand dollars everything else was seventy thousand or more. Everything I looked at was four wheel drive and the only thing on the lot was automatic transmission and V eight engine. Everything in the pickup truck line is priced too high by several thousand dollars.

In late 2019 I considered a new F150 XLT regular cab long bed 5 liter V8. A dealer in my area had them out the door for $26K. I think MSRP was in the low 30s. They do not make an XLT in that configuration now but the XL same truck is now $42K. Covid just became an excuse for everything. Most car manufacturers have gotten out of touch with reality if you look at it from the perspective of buying a vehicle outright. However the new paradigm is either leasing or buying with zero intention of paying it off to trade it in with negative equity in most cases. People only care about affordability of the payment and no consideration is given to the price or quality and durability of the vehicles. It is very wasteful and destroyed the market for people who want to buy a quality vehicle and keep it over 20 years. Toyota is having quality problems because their engineers are no longer making products to last a lifetime.
