I think the reaosn why people are so confused about this one is that he didn't really take the tie to explain the OLD system of how images are captured. With film photography, the lens of your camera leads light into the rectangular hole right in front of the film when the shutter opens. The film is made of a special material consisting of crystals sensitive to light on a transparent piece of plastic. It's literally a piece of transparent tape lined with crystal. When the film is developed, parts of the film that receive more light become black, and parts that recieved no light basically fall of the tape, leaving transparent film. This is why developed film is "negative", or reversed color. A DIGITAL IMAGE SENSOR attempts to work the same way as how the crystals on traditional film are CHEMICALLY ALTERED when exposed to light. Think of the sensor as that film that lies behind that rectangular hole in a film camera, but in a much smaller size, and instead of "crystals" that get exposed to light at a microscopic scale, you have little teeeny tiny squares, one for EVERY PIXEL, that are each recording data for the amount of exposure to light, and the color of that light, among other information (color has temperature and tint as well as exposure, there are lots of variables). So instead of developing a piece of FILM to remove MICROSCOPIC CRYSTALS to give a perfect image, a sensor is reciving pixel-to-pixel information, and a computer chip is processing the value of every one of those pixels.

Linus... as much as I love you (being the 14th that you published it), I have to disagree: CCD technology USED to have lower noise at specifics ISOs, specially lower ones. Which for most professional photography types, is needed most. But things have changed in the last 8 years. CMOS sensors have reached the same level of noise at low ISOs, while retaining greater IQ in the high ISOs, as they have better signal amplifiers, and specially since the convertion to digital has fewer steps, and therefore, less electronic noise is created. Anyway, almost all camera manufacturers have switched by now to CMOS, instead of CCD. Perhaps there are a couple medium format sensors out there that are CCD, but don't expect them to be many.

There's a major difference between CCD and CMOS that linus got very wrong: CCD sensors in most cases have multiple sensor panels stitched together to form one unit, and while it provides a higher overall sharpness, they're less reliable in low light due to the much lower iso efficiancy with noise; whereas a CMOS sensor will be a single panel sensor, which gives it the greater ability in low light as it's only one unit communicating with the cpu. if you try using a CCD sensor in low light vs a CMOS sensor, the CCD still is going to look like swiss cheese by comparison

actually ccd should be the one with rolling shutter issues, because with ccd rows are being read out one after another, while cmos reads all rows simultaneously.
@UniCrafter10 жыл бұрын
The sensor may only be exposed to light for a fraction of a second due to some sort of shutter/electronic shutter, and CMOS may be exposed the entire time it is being processed, because it can be processed faster, i.e. the CMOS sensor does not require a shutter, but the CCD needs one to operate properly, and the shutter that has been installed on the CCD just happens to be better than the CMOS.

It was my understanding CCD pixels operate on principles making them closer to photodiodes, gathering electrons and holes, while CMOS image sensor pixels operate by way of the same principle as xerox machines and laser printers, id est the fact photons reduce the static charge of a charged substrate when absorbed by it. I think the charged substrate for CMOS sensors would be capacitors. A friend of my fathers that use to work at Micron once spoke of the way people noticed dynamic ram chips without their packaging could act like primitive image sensors if you just read the memory addresses before filling all their digits with ones again. Was never very practical because of the spare addresses they print on the dies to replace dead addresses, plus the arrangement of the individual addresses, and the devices making them up, does not lend itself geometrically to putting the image together after getting the values. I also once found an electronics enthusiasts magazine from somewhere in the eighties with an article in it discussing whether ccd or dynamic ram was going to become the dominant RAM technology. Thought that was interesting...

In some circumstances i prefer Film over Digital photography, mainly in landscape photography. My Large Format camera far exceeds any Digital Camera in terms of Resolution, And it exceeds most in image quality. Only downside is it takes a few hours before a image is taken (not the exposure time). But if i use digital, i use CDD cameras. (and yes, CCD DSLR's exist)
@alanschamber10 жыл бұрын
CCD cameras haven't been around for years. What camera do you use? Have it occurr to you that it may be a reason for that? Large format cameras have advantages... true. But it's not like the final IQ is better, if you may be able to do several exposures, and process 16 bit RAW. Or even... have you tried shooting at ISO 3200 with the Pentax 645Z? There is absolutely no way a LF camera could even get close to that. It's over Kodak. Accept it.
@lbochtler10 жыл бұрын
Alan Schamber The CCD has been around a long time now, it was invented back in 1969. And speaking from experience, CCD cameras have beaten all my CMOS based cameras, in Astrophotography. In normal photography i use a Sony A350, as well as a Sony A6000. Both are good cameras, if you know how to use them. Also to you statement of LF vs. MF vs 35mm, in every test i have done my LF camera exceeded even digital MF cameras such as the Hasselblad H4D39 in image quality, dynamic range (just barley though, it also depends on the film), and resolution. Granted it takes a Drumscanner to actually achieve this. Also i use both Kodak- and Fuji Film. Shooting film is just different then digital, it does not forgive any mistakes, and that is good training for Photography. Oh, and BTW the Pentax 645D dose not go up to ISO3200 it maximum ISO is 1600. Also based on what i know about the Pentax 645D, its image quality is not all to impressive compared to a Hasselblad or a Phase One.
@lbochtler10 жыл бұрын
Alan Schamber Also you truely belive that a little Pentax 645D can outperform a 8x10" LF camera using Kodak Ektar 100, or Fujifl Velvia 50? As well as, say a Rodenstock Sironar-S Lens. in that configuration the camera is unbeatable. And yes, i have seen professional photographers use this in thair work. I talked to a guy doing a Building image of a local company, and he had the fallowing camera: Nikon D800 with a wide angle lens. Phase One MF digital back on a 4x5 LF body. And a 8x10 using film (cant remember the model). Both LF cameras had Rodenstock Lenses. I asked him why he had these exact cameras, he told me that the 8x10 is needed due to its resolution and image quality. As the Client wants large prints at high resolution. The other cameras are used to create a "backup" of the 8x10s film images. Just in case the film gets damaged. The D800 was used to capture from another perspective for a Catalog. Also have you even shot a image with the Pentax 645D? Because to me it sounds like you have not.
@alanschamber10 жыл бұрын
First.... I talked about the 645Z. You are outdated. Secondly... the Sony A6000 is a CMOS camera. Third: film is the one that has more forgiveness to give, unless you shoot with a positive one. You cannot recover a RAW file for even 20% you can recover negative film. And yes... CCD cameras have been used for a long time. But in recent years, CMOS have taken all the market. Even LEICA. Yep... even them. So please, read.
@alanschamber10 жыл бұрын
After reading the second comment... here it goes... I'll just copy and paste my first comment. I have ALREADY answered you that: "Large format cameras have advantages... true. But it's not like the final IQ is better, if you may be able to do several exposures, and process 16 bit RAW. Or even... have you tried shooting at ISO 3200 with the Pentax 645Z? There is absolutely no way a LF camera could even get close to that. It's over Kodak. Accept it." Large format cameras have advantages, IF they are shooting something really specific. But the real reason that photographer was shooting with that configuration, is because large format can shift the film, with no need for a tilt- shift lens, which is quite expensive. Welcome to the pro's world.

Great explanation! The question that I have is on the comparison of ccd vs cmos. You had mentioned that ccd is better in low light over cmos. The issue I have with this comparison is that in most digital cameras (i.e. a Leica M using CCD and a Nikon DSLR using cmos) the ccd cameras have moved over to cmos sensors in consumer/commercial applications due to cmos having better low light capability by the way of increasing the sensors sensitivity know as ISO. In a CCD sensor this sensitivity increase "cap" is typically much lower before you start to product unwanted noise in the resulting image. This is why Leica cameras (even though very expensive yet product great images) have a much lower ISO rating than most entry level/consumer DSLR cameras of today that use Cmos. Were you referring to the CCD sensors having better noise handling at lower sensitivity (ISO) ratings compared to a CMOS sensor, at the same ISO? Im just curious on this. Thanks!

image quality in respect to image sensors is affected more by sensor size, more than resolution. for instance, a 50MP medium format camera will be more detailed and sharper than a 50MP full frame or apsc camera. kinda disappointed linus didnt talk about the sensor size part of the equation since its one of the most important factors of an image sensor.
@louismeyer67666 жыл бұрын
You cannot deal without both datas. A 50mp medium format will be as sharper as 50mpx FF. The advantage of medium format in that case is pixel density. With the same image's resolution, the Medium Format is better in low light and in dynamic range

Ccd sensors wins because they capture an entire frame atonce and it's more light sensitive, so the there will be no rolling shutter or(as if a tower falls down during a rain storm),coms sensors suffers from these effects. I would highly recommand 3 ccd camera systems because they will capture the full color range, resulting in a slightly more fludly color experience unlike single ccd sensors.
