That "my sketchbook is for me" realization really hits home. I have been drawing as a hobby for a good 20 years or so, but have never been consistent. I had this same "epiphany" two years ago when I finally got an ipad and was able to break free, so to speak. I started seeing my sketchbook the same I saw my ipad, where my art is for me and "pages" are to practice and have fun on, not keep pristine bc I used to get paralized if I wasn't doing a masterpiece for others to look at. It was VERY liberating.
@Stratelier
@Stratelier 20 күн бұрын
It hits home for me too, but for a different reason -- the sole thing I HATED about highschool art class was that we had to keep a sketchbook, and periodically turn it in for the teacher to confirm we were actually doing anything with it. The simple fact that this was a graded* homework assignment actually precluded me from using it as a personal sketchbook! (I kept a second, actual "personal sketchbook" in the calendar pages of the school notebooks we were given at the start of each year.) * - sketchbooks were graded on a completion basis only, but they still contributed maybe 10-20% of your final grade for the class. In hindsight, I am certain that this being an assignment cost me a full letter grade in my favorite class.

I've been so self concious of my sketches recently. I felt like I should be at a level where they should look visually appealing and have proportions that create nice ratios. But seeing Devin's scratchy, not yet refined sketches with shapes that may not look just right yet makes me feel more comfortable

I am understanding this better recently. Firstly writing down a scenario( enviroment, the creature's way of living, so by this infos it's biological features, needs etc.) and than building up a body structure on it. So that my drawing itself will have a story. I love your videos, thank you very much ❤

For some reason, I often start drawing a dragon but it becomes a horse. And when I draw a horse, it wants to end up as a dragon. My conclusion is that dragons and horses might secretly be shapeshifters.

Love Horney Toads! I mean it would be really easy to turn them into a dragon saying one of their defense mechanisms is shooting blood from their eyes. Just turn blood to acid and you have a scary defense o.o Awesome art it's true one can learn so much from reality. There are some really epic lizards even more than the frilled lizard the possibilities are endless especially when people can also look at birds as well as mammals for the base!

hey guys at 7:15 in. When mentioning sketching on drawing paper which is thicker to be able to use markers on, what do you define as drawing paper please? I wasn't sure if over here in the UK that would be printer paper maybe? although that would be much thinner then the strathmore sketchbook so I presume that I have it wrong. Can anyone recommend? Thanks!
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 8 ай бұрын
Usually, it'll be called exactly that on the cover of a sketchbook. Drawing, Sketching, Marker, Watercolor and Multimedia will all be words you see describing the qualities and purpose of the different paper types. "Drawing" paper will usually be a bit thicker than printer paper and might have some texture to it but isn't always textured. Even cheaper drawing paper books from dollar stores and places lie that will still be able to work better with markers and other tools that are a little more wet than just a pencil or ballpoint pen. Hope that all helps!
