Coating the page with gesso is such a great idea! I do a similar thing when I use gouache in sketchbooks that aren't mixed media sketchbooks, I've found that if I put a thin layer of acrylic down I can then layer a bunch of gouache on top without the page being destroyed (however with some kind of gouache there may be some patchiness in the first layer. This is just a fun tip for sketchbook studies and the like)

Sanding Gesso is also very important to maintain the health of your brushes since the rough surface wears them down so fast! Also makes it so much of a joy to paint on, as with the markers ♥

Would love to see you try the tooli-art paint markers! They have a line of brush tip paint markers that I love, and they just released two new color packs with the brush tip. I wish more people knew about them! (The ones without the brush tip are really hard, they are meant for rock painting, but the brushes are perfect in my sketchbook!)

i adore your marker style! the way you use coloured lineart is so aesthetically pleasing. that being said, while this is super inspiring and i would love to try some more flat, graphic styles, paint markers feel like so much more work than the other mediums i use (they probably aren't, but the concept of having to lay down gesso and sand it really doesn't appeal to my lazy butt lmao). i think to achieve the same effect i might just keep playing with gouache haha
@imawonder3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Oh definitely, you can totally achieve near exact results with gouache for sure! And when filling in large areas using the paint markers it can get a little tedious haha (even with a medium size nib)

the different shades are so strange, i never had this problem with mine.... i love them for their different sized nibs. what I can recommend: shake them longer than you would with the poscas. the pigment needs more of a shake to not be streaky anymore. I like them on paper made from stone, they feel kind of "dry" on gesso.
@imawonder3 жыл бұрын
Yea I definitely will be mindful to shake them thoroughly next time!

I love both posca and molotow and mostly use them together. But I would recommend to someone starting out with paint markers to go with posca as I do find the markers more consistent and the need less shaking up. Also I think that poscas' limited colour selection is actual a positive as almost all of the colours work well together making cohesive colour schemes easier.
@imawonder3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree!

I'll be honest with you, the streakiness is NOT because of the duel ended nib. I so wanted to like them more because they're refillable but the paint quality is so... questionable. Extremely inconsistent. I bought one of the Molotow sketchbooks to see if I have better luck with them on their paper but I'm not hopeful.
@imawonder3 жыл бұрын
Yea I've played around with them a little more after this video and inconsistent is definitely the right word for the paint. Sometimes it's great and sometimes super watery - but seems like people are saying they need like minutes of shaking which is kinda annoying hahaha

Molotow products are highly pigmented they ground the pigments down 3x to a very fine, powdery consistency. I guarantee they execute this process for their spray paint and paint markers, not sure about their other products, but in pretty sure its a 360 deal. I know this because i had a friend who moved to Germany in pursue of a career in art, and ended up working for the company. I used to have your same problems with the markers until i realized you must shake them for a good 3 mins brand new and also through out your process. Slighlty depressing the nib every now n then even if not needed. Easier done than said lol got sick of going broke from buying Poscas every damn time they ran dry and i draw alot so lol now i got more cash in my pocket. Not a knock on Poscas i still love n work with them
@gabbywilliamson763 жыл бұрын
