It in a sense completes life, without it we have not known the life fully and have missed one of the most beautiful part of it. The last two stanza means;- Many people you can find are in relationship-- but they are just using it to cover their loneliness, or they are just infatuated and consider it as a love or they are lingering to the other person because they are afraid of lonely. In a cliche sense of societal usage they are a couple and considered as a lover, but there love is dead, it is not alive, it is not fulfilling the union, they are still looking at their petty interest. And this happens everyday.

The way these scenes were repurposed is really moving-it tells a completely different story of Travis. I always thought that the actual film intentionally portrayed NY as dingy, dirty and vice-ridden-which it was.
