To be fair, everyone talks about having fun and enjoying the ride even if it means making a joke out of existing institutions like XXL. Now most of the Sound cloud rappers are gone, a few have become superstars, and the institutions that made them (XXL and Soundcloud) are dead due to the generation they bred through their fans. Always happens like this, starts off as "lets have fun" and then all you can do is reminisce bc theres nothing left in the present.

"SoundCloud rap" or whatever it ends up being called in the future became a thing as a first instance where an independent scene could explode without a label through the internet. But now this is the norm. It's not indie anymore. Record labels have direct pipelines to whatever is making waves on social and the game has been figured out and is now a known process. Things are no longer organic they're just derivatives of what came before. The mid-10s really was a different time and it was exciting to see it blow up. I'm about the same age as Dontai and been a bucketeer for a minute. This was a fun video looking back on everything and seeing how things grew and evolved.

I missed out heavily on this era, I was ignorant in the way the old heads were, I just saw it as mumble rap and never gave it a chance, then I heard everyone in my school playing gucci gang so then I got into listening to lil pump, that moved onto uzi with him blowing up in the mainstream, all my friends at this time had been on soundcloud since mid-late 2016-2017 and I’d always hear them talking about it but as I said I just saw it as mumble rap and never gave it a chance, then x died and my friend posted it on his Snapchat story so I checked him out to see what happened and then that’s when I discovered his music, the day after he died, that moved me onto ski’s music, later juice wrld who I thankfully didn’t dismiss as mumble and properly got into his music and even until last year I never really gave people like carti or trippie redd a chance, like a listened to their big hits but never delved into their discography. Shame i was ignorant to the new wave otherwise I would’ve been able to witness the true soundcloud era instead of experiencing it through old KZbin videos 3 years after it happened.

I love the soundcloud era and the artists from it cus they showed us a whole new side to rap, prior to it there was artists who prioritised sound but in general lyrics were what mattered, the soundcloud era made it ok to not have any lyrical substance in the songs and of course some people think that’s the worst part of modern rap but i think it’s the best. Like imagine carti and uzi for example made their songs but tried to have good lyrics, if they really tried their hardest it would take away from the sound and would sound ass, them prioritising sound showed the world their talent, if they came out 10-15 years prior they never would’ve made it despite how much talent they have

It’s sad that there’s no organic way to start up as a rapper nowadays, like nowadays i feel like u need to know someone or u need to have money behind u to reach out to a label and basically be an industry plant which really sucks for those who really have talent but just can’t find the right producer or the right promotion methods etc. We all see those comments like “i’m a new rapper check out me music” on threads but instantly everyone’s reaction is “u not gonna make it lil bro” instead of trying to help them make it like when we used soundcloud we gave EVERYONE a chance, now if u don’t have atleast a little bit of motion u won’t make it. Also don’t get me started on those who blow up off a tiktok sound, artists who have genuine talent have been forced to try blow up via tiktok cus what other way do they have

Ever since then ive known atleast 30+ artists and almost 2,300 songs word for word. Ill say this, the lesser known ppl have the best music. If anyone wants to go back into soundcloud and listen to some artists that arent heavily influenced by tiktok trend songs(no offense): Ayce Comet, LATRELL,Lerado Khalil, 333stain, Aftertheparty(that guy who long look at me! Ik some of yall remember those covers), 777kplus, Mkyfm, slutty sonny, and 407Tennet. They wont be near to the old eras but they are really creative with their music and jus havin fun with it tbh
