I know I'm late to watching his play through of this but for anyone wondering.. it never really comfirms this in the game, but my theory is that faye (his wife) hand marked the trees ,that were part of her protection stave, for her pyre bc she knew Kratos wouldn't take atreus with him on the journey unless he was forced to and they wouldn't bond, so she forced it
