Proud to be a MacLean. Three hundred and ten for the Bonnie Prince

This song is part of my childhood. First band I ever saw play was The Corries and they gave me a lasting love of 2 things; folk music and my country! Yes they sang about our past but they also sang about our present and our future. The message I always got was that the future is in the hand of our children. I live my life by that message - maybe we all should!

This is so good. Was just reading about the Jacobite uprising because... of Wolfe Island in Canada which was named after James Wolfe, the young English general who first gained recognition for his role in suppressing the Jacobite uprising of Bonnie Prince Charlie. James Wolfe then went on to sail up the river St Laurent to capture Quebec city from the French. Though he died there, it led to the English capture of Montreal as well, losing the French their control over Canada. And this is why most of Canada is anglo. Lose myself on wikipedia because a friend went to Wolfe Island over the weekend and somehow find my way to another trad folklore song to learn and another lovely group to listen.

When Wolfe first heard of Highlanders joining the British army, he okayed it, his famous quote being "and no great mischief if they fall." Over the campaign in Canada, his opinion changed completely and was then quoted as saying his Highland regiments had provided him with "the finest corps of officers I have ever known." On the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, he chose to stand among the Fraser Highlanders and died in the arms of one of their segeants after learning the French had been trashed. Oh, and the story of Culloden is a lie. Sure, Cumberland won, but only by a fraction, as an event before the battle put the fear of death in him and caused him to pull back the entire right wing of his army. That is the explanation for the age old mystery of why those Jacobites who did attack, swerved to their right. My father gave me the details which had been handed down from our ancestor who was there, but it is only recently I found the corroboration I needed to start writing my book

@vanthedarkside I think you misunderstand the song. The song is about the Jacobite rebellion. The author of the song is inviting bonnie prince Charlie, leader of the Jacobite rebellion, for festivities. He's not inviting him for a fight.

Pretty sure there were the originall Scottish Stewarts, and then some French ones affecting the name, spelling it Stuart. I have no sources to back this up though, it's just a vague memory.
@alistairthompson83117 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you're bang on. Mary, Queen of Scots was exiled in France for a number of years from early in her childhood, during which time she married the dauphin. I think she changed the spelling to make it easier for the French to understand. There were also other Stewarts who were related to the Royal House and made successful military careers in France. They were rewarded for their services with French land and titles, probably to encourage them to stay in France, and in some cases it worked. I suspect they probably adopted the French spelling as well.

True there is no hard evidence of what would have happened if the rebellion was successful. However you have to consider a couple of things. Firstly James the vii/ii was king of Britain and this was the title that the old and young pretender wished to reclaim. secondly someone who gains a powerbase, by human nature, is unlikely to weaken that powerbase so considerably.

The stuarts which the jacobites wished to place on the throne at this time were catholic. Therefore you can see that there was a large amount of support from the catholic highlands due to this. there was a small amount fighting for a pre 1707 scotland but this was not the major cause. a stuart monarch would not have given scotland its own government as that would weaken their power as the monarch of britain.
@georgecampbell52813 жыл бұрын
After the reformation "the catholic highlands" were confined to five small regions, Upper Banffshire, Strathglass, Brae Lochaber, Morar/Arisaig, and Barra/South Uist. Together, they provided only a fraction of the Jacobite army. Even then, my family in Brae Lochaber who were "out" in the '45 were not Catholic.

And Mary Queen of Scots changed the spelling, because there is no "w" in the French alphabet. Thus it became Steuart and then Stuart. In the late 1970's I was a member of the cast of "Columba,." a musical about the life of the saint. I was an amateur, but a fellow cast member was a professional by the name of David Steuart, then the Director of Perth Rep. I'm told that one of his most famous pupils was a chap called Jason Connery.

subscribed.- Haendel was inspired by the Battle of Culloden the Jacobite rising 1745 - to compose the Judas Macabeus Oratory to Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland - which Battle King Charles took part-this song was dedicate to him -
@TheFoxington11 жыл бұрын
perhaps you have all forgotten that it was irish jacobites that fought and died in the greatest numbers for the ungrateful séamus a chaca (james the shite) and who were treated most harshly in their own land. after the treaty of limerick, where king billy offered reasonable terms of surrender to the brave jacobite army, the bigoted burgeoning protestant ascendancy, literally tore up the terms agreed and enacted the penal laws against not only catholics, but non-conforming protestants too. this took place while english, scottish and welsh jacobites lay comparatively low. and throughout the 18th century jacobitism was the primary political ideology amongst the catholic, and some protestant irish population, at least until 1766 when the pope recognised the hanoverian line as the legitimate successors to the throne of the three kingdoms.
@alistairthompson83118 жыл бұрын
All true, but as far as I can tell, this song's about Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose active supporters mainly came from Scotland, so consequently the folk memory of the Jacobite rebellion that he led, which turned out to be the last of them, is strongest in Scotland.
@nutyyyy5 жыл бұрын
22,000 Jacobites rose in Scotland in 1715, their aim to end the union and restore Scotland and its parliament. To a kingship of three seperate sovereign kingdoms, under the Kingship of James. So don't underestimate the support Jacobitism had in Scotland or make the mistake of the aims and sentiments were the same in the three Kingdoms.

Well, if memory serves, James VII wasn't exactly well loved in Scotland. Besides, the Scotish Parliament declared him to have forfeited the throne and accepted William of Orange. So if Scotland was cheated by anyone, she was cheated by her own Parliament.

i dont really mind if a person dismisses royalty, Theres no example today of noble ande worthwile Royals. But Scotland was cheated out of her Royal Family. If Scotland was to become a republic by the vote of the comon man I would abide by that and feel we had laid to rest the true royal line with dignity. The Hanovarian/windsors have no place nor love from Scotland. Never had Never will.

What i love about the Corries most of all, (aside from their brilliance as musicians, musical arrangers, and creative freedom that i envy being a practicing guitarist), plus their capacity to be great story tellers, historians and humorists, who take you to a time and place as they sing and play. What gets me is the debates their music incites in the comments box. Politics blaaaah, wars blaaaah, scotland blaa oops nearly said blaaah there but there was no truer word said that Scots 'couldn't agree on the colour of shite'. Sorry for the film quote but bygones are bygones and there are too many 'plastic jocks' floating about and spouting crap they've taken straight from the dinner table. Same shit happened in Germany during the 40's and it was called the hitler youth. I never gave hitler a capital letter cause he was a bloody demon, but in that same breath, aren't all kings and queens? Fight for a king or queen would you? Fair play to you
@sapien8210 ай бұрын
aye we maybe cannae agree on the colour ae shite , but what group of humans can really agree on anyhing, Roy did write flower of Scotland and the lyrics as you may well know say to leave this all in the past. I guess the reason it incites the debates is because Scotland unfortunately still has a religious divide that never really went away and also the whole Scottish independence debate is a part of that given that one side still wants to be a part of the crown and the others want their independence that was fought for all those years ago. I guess most Scots can agree the Corries are brilliant. sorry for the necromancy
