It was done quite a bit in some Northeast VFDs, especially on Long Island. There’s a documentary on the Baldwin FD from 1979 that shows guys from Hose Company 3 riding on the hose bed and grabbing gear on the side gear rack.

When I was active and just starting, I rode lots of tailboard and open jump seat, in Alaska(yes winter time to). Tail-boarding was finally quashed by OSHA in the late 80s but I rode in open jump seats until my department got its first fully enclosed cab apparatus! Good times!!

That used to be the way we did it. Somehow, we knew to hang on, the fires (there were more of them) went out, and we didn't automatically call for more people just because the fire department found a fire when they got to the scene of the fire call.

Reminds me of my Early Days in the Northeast Sector of the U.S. Fire Service back in the Early 1980's where we packed the Members into the Front Cab , the Open Jump Seats and filled up the Back Tailboards ! We even rode on the Sideboards of the Tiller Truck ! There's definitely serious dedication shown here on behalf of this Young Crew in this Clip that needs to be applauded ! They used to do it in the 70s and stopped in the 90s, but this crew got a call during a training exercise, and decided to all roll, and I think some countries still allow tailboard riding

Wherever that took place; most of the "drivers" were completely idiots. Refusing to get out of the fire truck's way and some morons actually pulled into their pathway. I certainly hope that was not in the U.S.A. although I have seen some drivers in the U.S.A. who are just as bad of drivers as were many in this video.

Canada and the US follows NFPA. The last time I read, they didn't follow them because they are not required to. They have their own regs.

NFPA has some good points but it has some bad ones too. Should be a recommending body like the NTSB not the overlords that they seem to be now. Too many little shoestring departments do without because they can't afford to meet some of the almighty NFPA rules.
