The Amish, a strange community

Welcome to Pennsylvania, the birthplace of the Amish in the United States.
They are a Christian ethno-religious group of Germanic origin and are known for leading a simple, peaceful and austere life, keeping themselves aloof from progress and influences from the outside world.
After several months of attempts, we finally succeeded in filming the daily life of this community from another age.

Considerez comme des gens d'une époque révolue et moqués ,il y a 40 ans,les Amish représentent aujourd'hui pour moi chrétienne,un exemple à suivre sur beaucoup de points. Ce qui protège leur communauté c'est d'avoir laissé le choix de quitter la communauté ou d'expulser ceux qui après avoir été baptisés ne voulaient pas suivre la bible telle que les Amish la pratique. Je me dis ,aujourd'hui,que si les Amish traversent cette époque de décadence de la foi aux USA comme en Europe et de l'emprise sans frein de la technologie,ils donneront la preuve d'être dans le vrai. Je leur tire mon chapeau et vu le nombre d'enfants par famille,ils risquent pas de disparaitreQue Dieu continue de les bénir.

Je ne suis pas Amish mais j ai connu ce type de vie chez mes grands parents a la montagne en Italie du Nord, sans électricité et eau courante....Nous étions très créatifs et heureux ce fut les meilleurs moments de ma vie , aujourd'hui j ai tout ce qu il faut mais cette simplicité je l admire et mis sent bien , il est trop tard j ai 65 ans

These people have always been peaceful, self-sufficient, positive, hard-working, preserved their values and beliefs, and an excellent example of how a strong community can stay pretty much self-sufficient with the right mindset. Mixed feelings after watching the film. Many values of the Amishcommunity seems so innocent and pure. Modesty. Ecological farming and healthy lifestyle, lots of excercise, etc. The sense of strong community. Then I get repulsed by the treatment of those abandoning the lifestyle, being not only excomunicated but also the family ties cut off. That to me feels like a crime towards the parental duty to love and care for your children no matter what. Although the ex-Amish lady told that many are not being cut off like she has been - so perhaps it's a bit like the worldly families, there's room for interpretation of the communal law. Fascinating how many ways there are to spend your life on Earth as a human. May we all be blessed in making wholesome choices 🤍

These Christ followers are from different groups. The Amish pictured here drive horse and buggy, and the River Brethren denomination drive cars - as the English do. I went to school with some fine folks from this denomination, and had a teacher who was from this sect as well. I believe the River Brethren are mainly from Franklin, York and Lancaster Counties in PA, although I've lost track over the years. Myron Dietz in this video, taught at Lancaster Mennonite High School 'for 45 joyous years' (per his obituary), and he passed away on November 27, 2015. I had his son for a teacher. I grew up in Franklin County and have lived in Lancaster County as an adult. Thank you for the video; good to see some familiar faces.

Are they related to Mennonites? We had Mennonite families living in our village in rural Kenya - Kisii. Very humble. They totally changed the people's perspectives about "wazungu". Some of the kids born there were given local names. The only problem is that they gave us dogs that we couldn't even feed 😂😅. Dogs eating better than we do. I love their way of life. Life shouldn't be as complicated as we make it to be. Life is simple.

As a person who was in a religious cult for almost 20 years, the temptation to get into perversion or drugs can be greater in a restrictive community because of boredom or the sheer lack of fun activities. You need balance in live. It is best to be part of an ethical supportive community for sure, but too restrictive causes pressure points, that will eventually burst.

While that may be true, our young people are turning to drugs and lusts of the flesh in droves, never having been in a restrictive setting such as the Amish or any other. So it seems the opposite is true as well. Young people looking for purpose and a place to belong will turn to perversion and/or drugs easily in today's " anything goes " world.

A chacun sa foi, j'ai 58 ans je suis catholique non pratiquante, mais je n'ai plus allumé ma télé depuis plus d'un an et ça ne me manque pas. Je pourrais vivre dans ce genre de communauté car je vis seule avec mes 2 chats, mes enfants, je les vois rarement à part ma dernière 2 fois par an. @@marier.5584 He has probably only known the novus ordo - which is not Catholic and has no transubstansiation, nor apostolic priesthood since the demons captured the papacy in 1958 (compare the documents on both to see it's true). Therefore, he is better off staying away from that and offering up the Latin Mass at home and receiving his sacraments spiritually as Jesus told us to do through Marie Julie Jahenny - church approved Briton stigmatist. I would never leave my Catholic faith, but would love to live like the Amish do. They are right about everything they've said, but should convert. I'm too old and sick now with kids no longer in the picture to attempt it any longer, sadly.

The river brethren and the Amish are two different groups the river brethren do not allow the rumspringa and they are usually all very consistent with their beliefs the Amish are not always the same either some of them are very consistent with their beliefs and others just live it but would drop it in a heartbeat if the bishop said they could

This documentary is mostly correct, but seems to suffer from several mischaracterizations. First of all, the backsides of the Lancaster Amish were shown, but then interviews done with the River Brethren - referred to as Amish; which are not Amish but a different group that does use electricity. The Mennonites also fall under a different group. They are all under what is known as Anabaptist. In addition, technology, with the exception of TV, is not regarded as 'evil', but rather something to be avoided because it can possibly pull members away from their dependence upon each other and away from the group.
