A person posted on Reddit today that they had a lease to start on 1/21 and the landlord suddenly canceled on them. I told them to call the rent control board in Los Angeles because if the building is built before 1978, you can't just cancel these. So if you're reading this, and they're trying to mess with your lease that you just signed right before these fires happen, check with the rent control board and make sure because they can't do that they can't suddenly cancel your lease so that way they can try to increase the rate for somebody else

I agree and got the same feeling from the guy when he brought up developers. His voice raised as those insured came up in his speech, typical predatory crook. Even the "nicer" ones are crooks, real estate is an absolutely disgusting industry with the lowest of characters, despicable!!!! I moved from California years ago, I grew up in Van Nuys and Pasadena, and spent half time in Massachusetts with my mom and neither are good states anymore because Democrats are extremely corrupt holding a monopoly on brain washed voters. I don't see how the residents can remain in cities & a state that poses such high risks to safety and rebuilding doesn't solve the internal public services that were intentionally sabotaged. This was done to drive working class people out, the poorer people. They want to build apt blocks and probably sell to Chinese investors or somebody sinister. Suddenly they're willing to lift restrictions to allow apt buildings, so my guess is that the socialist elites want people crammed in and paying crazy amounts of rent, eliminate home ownership to the working class which Biden started and made quite a dent on. I see you're point to not give in, but many people may have no other choices. I sensed it was very creepy this guy brought up developers the way he did. NBC makes it seem like a "well intentioned gouging" interview but reading between the lines you see what is at play. It was so much work to renovate my condo here in New England, I vowed I will NEVER buy a place that requires work ever again!!!! I couldn't even imagine building a new structure and how long that would take, and the exhausted hold that would put on people's lives. Tax payers should sue the state of California and flee with a hefty settlement. They'll be left so in the hole that their illegal utopia will all but dissolve. Then the federal govt can confiscate the state and start farming it properly, and reclaim the lands. Much of California is actually federal land. Not many people realize that. I'm going to be selling my other condo here, for under $200k, if anyone was interested but they'd have to say goodbye to California Dreams & hello Massachusetts. Unfortunately I am going to have to deal with agents and lawyers, the evil scum of the earth!!!! I do believe this man has plenty of idea's flying through his shifty head right now. Law suits take time, I am not sure what I'd do. If I were still living there and ended up a survivor who lost everything, I would try my darndest to legally pursue the govt and demand my taxes back plus damages and anguish. I'd try to get as much as I could for my land, the one thing definite would be to leave the state because it's too dangerous and outrageously corrupt. Nowhere is worth your personal health & safety. Not even those ocean front views!!

I was willing to abandon my beautiful 3600 sq ft home on 1/3 acre so a celebrity could live there in comfort while I downgraded to a cheap house or apartment while they wait for their home to get rebuilt. But clearly if I attempt to negotiate such a deal I am a bad person. So now the deal is now off the table. Too bad, because there might have been just one billionare who could have parted with 500K for the convience of living close to home and work in my beautiful home and now they will never get the chance. I really don't care because I don't need the money or the hassle anyhow. But I just figured that if someone REALLY needed my home, and were willing to pay the price, I would have been happy to negotiate. Well, I wish them all good luck! You are a good person Jason - may *YOU* get the credit for providing temporary homes for all of these people.

Although not Los Angeles proper, Long Beach offers numerous vacancies for individuals displaced by the fires. The proximity to downtown LA in some cases is shorter than many parts of Los Angeles.

If rents are increasing for the rich, will the government finally do something about it? It'd take at least two years before the cases are in court. In the end, the perpetrators pay a fine and not spend one day in jail. There will no serious consequences for price gouging even if they're shanking the rich.
