My God. How I LOVE this film....from the very beginning with the Missa Solemnis that plays in background. It is a work of art in too many ways to mention. An international cast, great cinematography, direction. A MUST SEE from beginning.....to ....end. ...as per the pseudo "musicologists" who criticize the actual "facts" behind this story....it is all still under debate. No one really knows. Even those who profess to be the "experts."

bravaLiz the film is great but dont forget that the story takes a lot of dramatic liberties. Its all based on Anton Schindler who is known be liar and to have made up lots of stories about Beethoven just to gain his own fame and to make some money. for example the idea that the immortal beloved was his brothers wife is all made up. There is no evidence. I would rather they did not make that stupid letter the centerpiece of the whole movie, Beethoven himself probably forgot about it. This movie is an insult to his greatness. He was about more than just one love letter...his music was for all humanity and transcends so many barriers, even today. Thats the problem with movies. There is no fact checking. Same with that other movie Amadeus. The movie was again great, but the story was a complete lie. They made Salieri the evil opposite of mozart but he was not. He was actually a decent composer. But the world wants a story with good and bad in it, and give give that for us!!

I found your comment...... and I understand completely the use of "artistic license"... but the mystery remains to this day among musicologists about how there were more accuracies rather than inaccuracies to this story. The Kreutzer scene e.g. is still in dispute. Was the violinist from Africa or the Caribbean? Most agree Karl was indeed his son and not his nephew. There are indeed inaccuracies in this film as to when he lost his hearing as well. And....the famous "pop tune" Für Elise was intended to be written in devotion to "Terese" or Teresa...not "Elise"... Alles Gutte! I suppose we could go on and on. However, I do indeed love this film. Vielen Dank for your posts. ;)

In my very particular point of view, this movie represent the best portrail of my beloved master, Gary Oldman deserved the Oscar by this outstanding performance. But no film, no narrative and no explanation will be ever enought homage to the greatest composer and artist that mankind has ever produced. Beethoven is infinitely above all art and the rest of human creation, in all the fields.

A great, and reasonably accurate opening scene-and the film has some nice moments. But the premise is so absurd, the inaccuracies so rampant, the depiction of Schindler so silly, that it always makes me wonder about films and real history

Labienus My God, man, name one MAJOR film biographic that is totally accurate in its depiction of history. It's not a documentary. This is one of the most beautifully crafted films about a man who wrote the worlds most beautiful music while handicapped in the worst way. You use the phrase "totally" accurate-and that is not what I complained about. Dramatic license is I guess necessary-though the true reality generally is far superior. While certain historic films can play a nice role if they make you seek out the truth, the real experience, though my old history professor always dismissed it as Hollywood History. In this case what makes it so frustrating is that there are some compelling scenes, and some attempt at historic accuracy,but it makes it harder to take when as I put it above-the premise is so absurd and misleading The immortal beloved is his sister in law-don't you understand how it distorts the entire understanding of B's personality? A film could have Schindler-and it could have a little license-but don't you understand that he was really a manipulative monster who did serious damage to the understanding of B's life. In the same area. let's take Amadeus. There is no evidence that Salieri poisoned him-though he was jealous of him-and the requiem's commission was somewhat mysterious butthat part of it does not exclusively dominate the film. "Nothing could be better".you say.really..and while I agree that it is not supposed to be a documentary-sometimes with these films IMO it would be better if they were just wonderfully done scenes from a life.

I agree. Deciding his Immortal Beloved was his sister-in-law - and that he had fathered a child by her - went WAY beyond the usual "Hey!, it's only a movie!" filmmaking. Beethoven screwing his brother's wife and having her be the mother of Beethoven's son - that's not just fake history. It's really bad writing. 🙄
