Since you posted this Dev I've read and 'confirmed' from multiple sources that it was recorded in E standard and sped post recording raising the pitch to F. Another credit to yourself as you play it at the raised speed so cleanly, and hope for the rest of us mere mortals who may struggle can realise that we're playing along to studio trickery!

@@DevGohil no worries man, well the semi official explanation is 'they thought the songs and album as a whole sounded too slow' - they wanted an absolutely blazing storm effect for the listener, so it was sped up with the effect of raising the pitch. And Metallica as its well known, did exactly the same thing on MoP. As per Fleming the producer, the song MoP was recorded at 184bpm and sped up during production to the 210ish bpm or whatever it is in the final product. The official reason was Hetfield wasn't happy that it was executed as cleanly and tightly when trying to record it at the desired speed, and they tuned a hair flat to compensate for the inevitable raise in pitch and Fleming sped it up. Funny for all the shit Lars takes, here Papa Het couldn't do the seemingly impossible!

@@DevGohil exactly! both bands do the respective songs justice live, but it does as a guitarist leave a bad taste in the mouth - for a generation people tried to blast along to MoP and struggled - no shit - even Hetfield wasn't actually doing it

@@DevGohil And instead of taking the endless applause and accolades how about having the courage to own it! Was also apparent on Ride the Lightning as a guitar interviewer - Guitar World if memory serves me correct, tripped up Kirk when he asked about For Whom... is tuned to around F - Hammett categorically denied this and stated RTL is tuned to E standard. The interviewer was too polite to point out the obvious - then it must have been sped up post recording to raise the pitch. No more at the time was said, I guess the giant Metallica media machine cut it down, but I'm sure Kirk didn't get a Xmas card from James that year.

Instead of F standard, it should be E standard. They recorded it in E and sped it up. Sounds way more natural if you tune the song down.

Great playing, tone and teaching Dev. I wondered if there was any clarification on the tuning or potential speeding up post recording and if so a related higher pitch shifting? Battles in the North was rumoured to be, I'm curious if this was a technique used at the time or they simply tuned to F

I am pretty positive the drum tracks were sped up and played by Abbath, songs like Creeping Death had faulty speed ups and I believe this is another instance of that.

I have a question, how can I get that characteristic black metal sound in my Boss Katana 50, I get a brutal sound but the sixth string still sounds very heavy in the death metal style, should I turn the bass completely down on my amp? I would like the sound you use in riff 2 of the course Black Metal Guitar Mastery.
