@Truck Stop I've done Imogene as well, and there were parts that I wouldn't take my f250 crew cab long bed which was 22ft. long. Turns would be too tight. Also some areas at the beginning of the pass recently washed out so I'd be leery of the stability off camber with that high of a COG. We did it in my 16 Rubicon on 35's and it was nerve racking in spots.

@JerryWDaviscom4 жыл бұрын
Gregory Rizer - you can do it. You CAN do it. You have to get some cash flow, live as cheaply as humanly possible and spend your money on equipment. Boots, a good backpack, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cooking equipment - go to an REI store and tell them what you plan to do and they will help you a lot. You need a vehicle, and that will cost the most, but a GOOD used Toyota 4Runner is the king of the road. A 4WD 4Runner is, too, but 4WD is rarely used. I have had three 4WD vehicles (2SUV and one F150) and 4WD is rarely used. Good TIRES, good transmission, engine and cooling system - very important. You can relocate to the area you want to live in after you get your equipment together. Then, you can get some kind of job that provides cheap rent money, and do your exploring when you are off. Personally, I would rather backpack and explore than work, but we still have to have cash so some kind of work that brings in money is "necessary equipment". I encourage you to do this. It will give you a new life and remake you. You can talk to God on the trial like you have never talked to Him before. Get your equipment together and go find Him out there. He wants to have a good conversation with you :)

Ouray, my home for 15 years many years ago. My neighbor and I would telemark ski Imogene every spring starting on Red Mt Pass, up and across the ridge then down Imogene. It was always a blast. One year we looked down at our skis and discovered we were standing on top of a Jeep Wrangler. Later we got the scoop on it. The owner wanted to make one last trek over to Telluride that fall but, unfortunately, that was the day and the hour the winter snows rolled in. He got to walk out in an early season blizzard. He recovered his Jeep later in the spring. That same year and in the same area the bulldozer that clears the road in the spring slid sideways down the mountain but, fortunately, the driver was able to jump off before it rolled. Amazingly, he and the dozer were fine. Imogene is fun to jeep and mountain bike. Have you done Black Bear? Very Dangerous and one way only. I never had the nerve to jeep it so I did it on a mountain bike. That was a real challenge. Someone had to change a tire on their Jeep near the top and lost control of the spare which rolled and bounced, 50 feet in the air at times, into the town of Telluride. It T-Boned, of all vehicles, a brand new, top-of-the-line Range Rover which exploded into tiny shards. No one was injured thankfully. Lots of adventures to be had in the San Juan and Cimmeron Mountains. Check out Owl Creek Pass in the Cimmeron's outside of Ridgway next time you're out here. Very scenic. Take time to hike Wetterhorn Pass. That and Highland Mary Lakes out of Silverton are the two most popular hikes in the area. Both would make spectacular drone footage! Neither is considered to be difficult hiking. Great video. Now I want a drone. Thanks!

I’ve done this pass with a friend and horses. Spent ten days on the trail. You did a wonderful job video taping this but do it by horse with some climbing gear, there are some places that you find old trails, homesteads that have not been touched for a hundred years. Places where you can stay for days and be utterly alone except for wildlife. Again, I want to say great job, even in a truck you must be white knuckling that steering wheel on some of the trail. My Mom and Sister had their eyes closed most of the time. One thing I missed though (it may not still exist with the development of Telluride) was the switchback down the mountain into Telluride. The turns were so sharp that large jeeps had to drive down one switchback and back down the next one since they couldn't make the turns.

I perked up at your comments ( I live in Canada so its a drive to get down there ) as I went on a driving/camping trip in 2007 in July to explore some of the four wheel drive trails I thought I could dare do in my extended cab half ton chevy which is certainly not the hot setup for trails and got a lot of looks and comments of amazement .. way too big, horrible turning radius etc but just added to the challenge and yes I did do Imogene. But also on that trip I went down to northern Arizona and over to Death Valley and was that ever hot, then up to the east side of Yosemite and into the park and hiked to the top of Half Dome and that was a challenge for my body to put it mildly. What a spectacular place in Yosemite though but oh so crazy busy.

And when coming down when you paused by that stark, slit-like canyon then descending further beneath those overhangs: Amazing. Great video. Brought back lots of memories. Moved to Durango in 1972 and spent 30 years there. Did Imogene a number of times, as well as most of the roads between Durango, Telluride and Silverton, but as mentioned by a previous post, Black Bear is the one that brings you to your knees. And you’re right, the rental jeeps that go up have no idea what they’re in for in many cases. Nice job filming it.

What a wonderful video! Well thought out, well executed, well edited, overall a terrific piece of work. In addition, your subject reveals your genuine affection you have for this very special place on our beautiful home, this Earth of ours. Finally, this area holds special meaning for me. When I returned home from the Vietnam War in 1973, I was doing my best to sequester myself from my recent experiences, and try to make some sense of it all. I bought a VW Beetle, left only the driver's seat in it, and with my father's help, converted it to a very small, but adequate living space. With the addition of oversized tires, it made a decent overlanding vehicle. My old high school buddy and his new bride had moved to Ouray, the longtime dream of an Ohio boy whose family were transplanted Coloradans. I ended up car camping for a week in Yankee Boy Basin, alone with my thoughts. I really can't claim that I was able to come to full resolution of my demons, but I had a little better idea of what they were. So, if there is anyone out there who saw a guy with shoulder length hair, living out of a tan Beetle in Yankee Boy Basin during the summer of 1973, well there I was. So, fine sir, I thank you deeply for that little tickle of the memory of that particular episode of my life.

Imogene Pass; now I know of it and where it’s at. The beauty is breath taking and just a bit sentimental. Thanks to you friend, I can scratch it off my bucket list. My Mrs. and I just retired and once I’ve seen all the USA has to offer......... then maybe I’ll consider other country’s. I’ve seen 46 states as a Semi driver. So now I drive the two-lane to see what I missed ......

I like the drone perspective you included because it gives a good sense of the scale of the mountain compared to your truck. I also like that you are aware of how unique the geography and history of this area is .

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful part of our country with all of us. everything that’s going on in our world currently, many of us forget to ‘stop & smell the roses’, and either take for granted or have forgotten how beautifully breathtaking parts of our country truly are.

Nice video. I enjoyed watching. Good music selection. Book of Eli ! One of my favorites. 35 yrs. ago I would ride my dirt bike down Main St. in Telluride and Ouray. Would pitch a tent and build a fire in an empty lot, 2 blocks away. This past Sept. I had to do it in an SUV. A permit was required to park along the curb.

Brings back memories! We use to go out there every summer in a 73 scout! Camping up there along a stream and listening to that stream was the bomb! Only time we hit pavement was to cross it or catch supplies in town or another trail! Not a better set of mountains like the San Juan Mountains!

I love the colorado mountains and spent a lot of time in them. My favorite place is Escalante canyon , and my Dad lived in H.A. SMITHS cabin for a while with his parents in the 30s. Beautiful footage and editing Richie. My husband talked me into the million dollar highway trip on the way back from AZ and Utah via Durango to Silverton then down to C Springs to get back to Parker. It was paved but crazy scary. We were towing a Casita with a Honda Pilot in April - avalanches and rock slides and ice and heavy snow on the passes. Never been so scared in my life and the roads were paved. Never saw another driver towing anything. I don't know how people live up in Silverton all year. Really enjoyed your video!!
