The Red Sox are going to suck this year with their current roster.

Yeah our starting pitching staff is a joke, our bullpen isn’t deep, and we have a lot of young fielders that were terrible at defense last year. Only thing going for us is our batting which is okay in power and seemed a little inconsistent last year. We should have a nice last place finish again this year.

@@Noname33336 I agree. This present roster is subpar.

Nah, outside our bad rotation our bullpen is weirdly great but our offense is seriously lacking in power and only going to be worse this year now that we’re missing Duval and Turner.

I don't know enough to confidently make this claim, but this might be the deepest bullpen in the majors. The projected AAA bullpen is stuffed with relief prospects and middle relievers with a history of major league success. Per SoxProspects, all of the following project to start the year in Worcester: Winckowski (multi-inning leverage arm last year), Campbell (solid with Seattle last year in 27 appearances; 95 mph fastball, 3.32 FIP, 3.87 xERA), Zack Kelly (was solid in limited action in 22, and made the team in 23 before going down with an elbow injury in mid April), Weissert (nasty slider, made 29 solid enough appearances for NYY from 22-23), Chris Murphy (3.71 xERA in 47.2 IP for Boston last year, mostly in multi-inning relief), Cooper Criswell (a Rays swingman from 22-23 who reportedly had interest from multiple teams before signing in Boston for $1 million), and Luis Guerrero (prospect, sits 96-98, tops out at 100, looks like at least a middle reliever, with a setup man ceiling). Even guys like Franklin German (originally from the Ottavino trade, averaged 97.9 mph in limited action for the Sox in 22) and Joe Jacques (let down by bad defense, but great at generating soft contact last year in Boston; 3.98 xERA in 23 appearances) are interesting as depth. Then there's the major league pen. Jansen is aging and had some injuries last year but is still a bonafide closer and had a bizarre but awesome resurgence in velocity, Martin was probably the best setup man in the majors last year, Schreiber, Bernardino, Whitlock, and Houck all have history excelling in high leverage, Slaten has amazing raw stuff as a rule 5 guy, etc. This bullpen is both deep and good. As for the rotation and roster, they have the bones there of a decent team. Add another RH bat and another starter, at least, and the team should be a legit WC contender.

Jordan Montgomery is a great fit but this cheap ownership group who makes billions of dollars every year from the Sox won’t go past 18 million dollars. Cheap cheap cheap

What are you even talking about? Devers got 11/331 (29 MM AAV) last year and Story got 6/140 (23.3 MM AAV) the year before. Even Giolito, the subject of this video, is making more than $18 million a year. Montgomery is unspectacularly above average and set to make way more money than he really should. Montgomery, more than any other prominent FA, is going to get wrecked by robo umps, since he lives and dies with calls a few inches off the outside corner.

0:14 Why does SP handedness matter? I don't think it does except in niche situations, like if you have a couple of comparably good starters and you're playing a postseason series against a team with an unbalanced lineup.

Situational LHP is a need but a good to great RHP starter can handle the LHB. I want durability, Ks and control much more so than anything else. I like Giolito on the team. If Bello and Houck continue to grow and they get one more very good starter then this team will be better than most think.
