TEN (10) MISTAKES MADE IN ITALY THAT ARE BEING REPEATED IN CAMEROON. The Coronavirus outbreak started in China on December 31st 2019. It rapidly spread to other world countries, including Iran and South Korea. On February 20th, the first case of the virus was diagnosed in Italy. As of date, there are 31,506 confirmed cases and 2,503 deaths in Italy. Italy is also by far the second most affected country in the world. On March 6, the first case of the virus was diagnosed in Cameroon and on March 17, the country had 10 cases and only then did they pass the first set of rules to curb the spread of the virus. 1⃣ NO MASS TESTING: At first, Italy didn't do mass testing for COVID-19. In fact, the first case was a man who went for voluntary testing in the town of Lombardy. Cameroon is doing the same thing. Instead of actively identifying cases, they simply give out a number and expect people to call. Failure! 2⃣ POOR EDUCATION: As identified on Al Jazeera English, the Italian government didn't put in enough to educate Italians on how the virus is spread. In Cameroon, no official seminars, no TV messages, no flyers, no messages from telecom companies on COVID-19! Failure! 3⃣ PREPAREDNESS: Italy boasts of one of the best health systems in the world, manifested in their very high life expectancy. This gave them the false idea that they were prepared to face COVID-19. Cameroon has a very weak health system but is doing very little to empower the health system to face the pandemic in terms of structures and capacity building. Failure! 4⃣ OVER CROWDING HOSPITALS: Because Italy failed to build new hospitals and only made two makeshift hospitals, they had to overcrowd hospitals. This made the spread of other infections more likely and thus, deaths. Cameroon has prepared just six hospitals, none of which has a 500 bed capacity. This will lead to overcrowding same as in Italy. Failure! 5⃣ HALF MEASURES: When there was a sharp increase in cases in Northern Italy, they shutdown only that part of the country. Though the shutdown was later extended to the whole country, it was apparently too late. In Cameroon, measures put in place to curb COVID-19 do not affect everyone. Although everyone coming from Europe must be quarantined, some are seemingly above this order. Although no gatherings over 50 are accepted, the parliament of nearly 170 members is going on. Failure! 6⃣ FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT PROPOSALS: As of now, if you leave your house in Italy without a good reason, you will be fined $150 and can be jailed for up to three months. However, this wasn't the case. The EUObserver says 20,000 people refused to follow instructions to stay at home earlier this month, facilitating the spread of the virus. In Cameroon, although schools and other gatherings have been prohibited, they are still going on. Markets are crowded and schools are ongoing as we speak. Failure! 7️⃣ MISINFORMATION: The press in Italy leaked information that Lombardy (the epicenter of the outbreak in Italy) will be locked down indefinitely, and other parts of the country will be just fine. This caused people to flee the area, to other parts of the country carrying the virus with them. In Cameroon we have several news sites that publish unverified and confidential information, that is causing panic which will only worsen the situation. Failure! 8️⃣ POOR TESTING: Before mass testing began in Italy, people who presented with Symptoms received treatment for the seasonal flu (common cold/Catarrh). This caused the widespread of the virus before diagnosis began. In Cameroon now, we are experiencing a time where cases of common cold are high. Therefore, people assume that they have Common Cold, and not COVID-19 thus do not call 1510. This will cause a severe spread on the virus if any one of the people presenting with symptoms is actually infected with the virus. Therefore, as soon as you notice symptoms, call 1510. 9️⃣ COMPLACENCY: Italy had a response team that will pick up people who were infected. However, the team was complacent and didn't arrive on time. This enabled the victims to spread the virus before the team arrives. Cameroon has provided a toll-free number to be called in case someone has COVID-19 symptoms, 1⃣5⃣1⃣0️⃣. However, they hardly pick up, probably because they do not take it seriously or they are overwhelmed. Failure! 🔟 CLEANLINESS: The town most hit by COVID-19 in Italy is Lombardy. It is also considered the dirtiest town in Italy and according to Al Jazeera, this contributed to the wide spread of the virus. Cameroonian cities are so dirty, with garbbage heaps all over. Should local transmission occur in Cameroon, things will quickly get out of hand. We hope this serves as an eye opener and propels the government to take the necessary steps to contain this much dreaded pandemic.
