Here is the true value of modern audio/video recordings. The speaker gives 1 presentation, (10 years ago,) and I can watch it over and over as many times as I need to in order for it to all sink in! I don't have to ask him to be my Elmer and bother him every day with questions. I don't have to take meticulous notes during a 1 time presentation. I just keep popping back to KZbin and re-watching sections of this until I grasp it, all of it. And all for FREE! Years ago, after he retired, I spent a day visiting with and discussing with Doug DeMaw physically short longwave transmitting antennas. I remember far more than I would normally remember, because we lived over 150 miles apart, (so there would be little chance to spend more time talking together,) but unfortunately some of what we discussed has faded in my memory, and his books simply don't target the subject, as there was no ham longwave band at the time, (though that didn't stop me since there was a license-free band on 1750 meters,) and I regret the loss of both him and all of the knowledge he possessed and provided. But through the magic of videos like this I can continue to be mentored by the very best without being a bother to them and without misunderstanding or forgetting a thing. Their combined knowledge at the tip of my finger at any time in my own home is the best possible resource for gaining knowledge of my own. I very much appreciate Ward Silver doing this presentation and allowing it to be put up on KZbin. The fact that in the last 10 years it has had nearly a quarter million views says it all. I want to have a teacher like a speaker in my life. He only confirms that you really understand things if you can explain them in simple words. Thank you, it was awesome!

Sorry everyone on my audio and video quality. This was a hand held camera and using the mic on the camera. It was a crowded room, folks next to me were moving around and reading their programs. Thank you for your comments.

Being a former event shooting videographer you did as good a job as anyone should expect. I use to play videotapes of witnesses and found using a smaller screen would make a jury actually concentrate on seeing the video as opposed to a larger screen. seeing the video as opposed to a larger screen. that allowed their minds to wander around and actually not get the info into their minds. Good job!!

I wish I'd found this video 11 years ago. What an awesome teacher. This video may as well have been titled "ah-ha!".. The analogies he uses have elucidated concepts I've struggled to visualise for a decade 😂 wow ❤

Very good video. Thank you for posting it. It answers a lot of question that I develop while making my antennas. I have books and web pages with the answers, but it takes forever to find them. This lecture is hitting all the bases. I have it bookmarked now for future reference. Unfortunately for me, I am having a hard time hearing his voice clearly. Audio quality, while not a bad, is hard for me to decipher. (Just like listening to HF) But that is fine. I just keep backing it up and playing it over. Thanks again.

@James Rockford ... So critical. Its obvious this is not recorded by a professional using the proper equipment. Had you taken the time to peruse some of the comments you would have noticed that the person that recorded this commented more than 1 year ago and apologizes or the quality. there are 2 functions on an antenna 1. horizontal = cos = longitude = (0-360) = xz : P= I^2*R = real 2. vertical = sin = latitude = (+-) 90 = yz = P = Ev^2/R = imaginary 3. azimuth = distance = Power = z + (xy) = Pt = Ev * I = total

Very good presentation. The following is NOT to be critical of you. Audio Transformers DO NOT "reflect" anything. Transformer ratios and their equations remain THE SAME. When the primary impedance changes consequently the secondary Z changes appropriately. Yes, I FEEL BETTER NOW. An unrelated issue: Some reviews at Stereophile do not acknowledge the vacuum tube amplifiers use OPTs which match the Z from the tubes to the speaker? Very strange!

The best antenna build is useless if your cable connecting it to the radio is of bad quality where impedance is not stable along the cable otherwise you will have poor return loss.Select great components cables by reading these articles on how to select a good cable epricedtech.com/blog and see those unbelievable prices on Belden RG8X epricedtech.com/Coaxial-Cable-RG8X-RG-8X-Belden-7808A-50-ohm-Low-Loss-RF240-LMR240-LMR-240 and RG6 epricedtech.com/Belden-1694-A-rg6-coaxial-cable-f-connector-75-ohm

+Dan M as you can notice the link is dead and i don't know who registered the domain name. When the domain was still alive there was some very useful technical articles on this site. so it was't only for commercial purpose but also educational, but now since the domain is dead we don't know where the links point to....cheers

1. Why waste time doing so? Why not correctly tune an antenna in the first place, WITHOUT a kluged up ladder line inserted between low R transmitter and antenna and be done with it? 2. Impedance matching i.e.conjugate matching DOES NOT result in best antenna perfirmance. Its a poor band aid to EXTERNALLY match the impedance projected out if the feedpoint but DOES NOT change the antenna in any way. The antenna itself is still out of tune by virtue of being incorrectly made and NO conjugate tricks can fix that. Antennas are not tuned discrete LC R circuits and conjugate matching and band aids cannot fix that. Unfortunately few hams have sufgicient education beyond sone poor thin circuit reasoning and cannot perceive that antennas are not circuits, they are electro magnetic entities.

I'd love to have a "properly tuned" antenna, but I don't have the space. I _have_ to null out reactances and to resort to kludges for the best compromised performance or simply throw up my hands and take up knitting instead of amateur radio. Were you drunk when you posted your comment, or are you just an arrogant jerk?
