If it already matches the impedance, why do you have to check the speakers & the amp for 8 ohms?

I have a newer switch - instead of jumpers I have a selector for 2, 4, 8 and 16 ohms... based on the title I was hoping to have those selections explained (i.e. situations when to select one or the other).
